Don't touch a Dell, it will come with obsolete parts and get hot enough to cook dinner on LOL Seriously though, DELL are crap and do use obsolete parts as well as refurbished (2nd hand, damaged and repaired) parts. Also DELL use on-board graphics and sound. Open a DELL and you'll find enough room to build a PC in. Their cases are empty! You will also find a serious lack of expansion bays etc. so it's difficult to upgrade and you can't add extra hardware. This is a problem as you will need to upgrade some hardware at least every two years. The only solution with DELL is have your laptop dumped in an environmentally disasterous mountain of dangerous polution, in India and buy a new DELL. Get a decent manufacturer and you should see at least 7 years use and it will still be running good enough to export to a poor country for some poor child to use.

maybe previous dell models have sucked but they've revamped their inspiron line and now use some magnesium alloy for the shell, and i also think they have shock-mounted hard drives. the latitude series is excellent, i'm typing on a d630 right now.
however, $700 may be a bit on the low side to be able to get one of the newer inspiron models. i suggest that you check out the 1420 and the 1520, both of which are the latest. try saving about 300-500 more and i think you can get a model that will allow you to do everyday tasks (although if you would like to play a lot of games, i suggest upgrading both the sound and graphics cards, which may cost around 150-200 more). good luck!

$700 will get you a basic no frills laptop with no software other than windows installed and since they are putting windows Vista in PC's now, you won't even get full function out of it without adding 1 more GB of memory $125+. If you want a great laptop, add about $1000 minimum

you should like hp's they are good and second to no other company even dell. plus dell is more expiensive. also cdw.com has laptops, they are a major thing for businesses though. my dads corporation buy laptops from them. just if you go there look at all the ones that are 700 and compare specs you might find somehave better specs for less.

$700 is definitely not enough to buy a good dependable laptop. The best PC is IBM. Their laptops are excellent but VERY expensive - averaging $2,000 the last time I checked.

Lenovos are usually the best, inexpensive laptops, but you can find great deals on newegg.com on alot of different laptops. Try to get a dual core with at least 1 gig of RAM. Don't let Dell sucker you into one of theirs, they are usually overpriced for what you get. Try to get an HP, Lenovo, or Acer.

Walmart, Circuit City... you would do a lot better if you sold something else and got about 900-1000. That would be a lot easier to buy a decent laptop with.
STAY AWAY FROM INTEL CELERON.
Go AMD or another intel.
