It depends on the laptop. My dell for example has cooling vents on the bottom, so blocking them with bedsheets is a very bad idea. High temperatures can cause damage to internal circuity as well as drain battery life (as the laptop is running its fans all the time). If you really want to put it on your bed, get something like this:

Then again, I have an IBM that puts out very little heat so that one would be ok.
Since it sounds like your laptop is getting hot, i'd recomend getting a cooling pad like the one from the link above. Most Best Buys and Curcuit Cities carry this product.

Laptops generate a lot of heat - much of it from the bottom and sides. Putting the laptop on a soft surface makes it more difficult for the laptop to get rid of this heat, which could damage your laptop over the long run.
Short uses should be OK, but if you're already saying the laptop is getting hot, I wouldn't recommend you keep using it on your bed.
When I want to use my laptop in bed, I put it on this folding breakfast tray I got from Bed Bath & Beyond. My laptop is small enough that I can also fit a small mouse or a trackball on the tray as well. As a bonus, the tray makes it easy to move the laptop from room to room, and the folding legs allow me to sit up in bed.

nicely i've got in no way been on a airplane. I probable would not attempt to speak to the passenger and that's particularly because of the fact i'm no longer large at chatting with human beings and that i would not type myself as being social as i'm greater of a private individual.

Yep, it will usually cause it to heat up too much. It shouldn't hurt if you just need to do it for a few minutes, but I wouldn't leave it on a soft surface any longer than that. :)

I would say, yes. It should be on a solid surface so that the peds can maintain it's raise off of the surface and allow for air flow underneath it.

Yes, that is bad for it. Put it on a piece of wood, a TV tray, or a cardboard box even. Good night!

If it is vented on the underside, it may cause a blockage of the vents, and thus, overheating. Otherwise it should be OK.

Read your documentation.
This would block the vent holes that allow ventilation
