My advice on laptops is always to first figure out exactly what you are going to use it for. There are basically two broad categories, regardless of mac or pc, the small and the big ones.
If you are going to carry it to every class and always have it handy for standard college stuff (like word, excel and matlab) you want to go with a small. If the computer is going to stay in your dorm and will be doing stuff like gaming or watching tv, you want to go with a big one.
A small laptop is one that is less than 2 Kg (I don't think Apple have produced anything that light since the 13" Mac Book Pro though). You will not want to carry anything heavier everywhere you go. I use a small at home, perfect for watching movies in bed or working on public transportation, and a big one at work, since I really need the performance and the big screen.

It depends on what programs you are going to be using. If you are going to be using a lot of creative programs, such as Adobe Illustrator and Macromedia Flash MX, then you would want an Apple iBook Pro. That laptop is going to cover pretty much every program you use in college (I know from first hand experience)

Multimedia laptops are the best laptops to use for school. You can watch DVD's play games, take full advantage of the internet, create awesome school projects, etc.

Toshiba. They last forever.
I have friends with macs and they're constantly having problems... The only time I've had a problem is when my memory card got a bit dirty, and then all I had to do was use a pressure blower to clean everything out.
