I need to know if any computer companies ever made a Serial Port for a laptop to use internet on; a serial to ISP-preferably, a LAN or any high speed connections; Dial up would also be ok. If anyone knows a brand or a reference for searching to buy one.
Thank you for your time!

how is using laptops going to be a potential risk for users?

My laptop wouldn’t start the other day. It's 3 years old. The battery got 25 min to a 100% charge (used to be 4 hrs) , so I thought the battery was the culprit. Bought a new one, put it in and my laptop started right up. However, I could not get the AC to hook up to the back. I have had difficulty for about a year now with that stupid connector..twisting and turning it etc.. So it will finally connect and charge.

My question is: do those connector pieces you hook up to your laptop to charge it get "stripped" i.e. do you sometimes need to get a new one?

Also- my laptop said 30 min (16%) remaining, and when I was fidgeting with the power chord to charge it, my laptop spontaneously shut off. No pop-up saying "low battery" etc.. It just shut off. Now it won't turm back on. I am not sure if I should buy a new charger or send it to geek squad to look at the connection.

If you have any ideas, especially in view of the fact the connector sucks, I would appreciate it.

i have a compaq presario laptop and i have used it for a year... the problem is the plastic in the jack of the battery pack ( usually yellow in color) burned because of over heating and this caused the jack to be so loose that sometimes you need to place something underneath the jack like a book for it to work.... and recently we bought a new laptop and i tried borrowing its charger because its the same as the 1st one.. after an hour or so the jack of the new battery pack also burned and the small steel rod of my computer( wherein you insert the jack ) sticked inside the jack... i dont know what to do....

Good day computer experts! My desktop pc crushed. Every time I boot the computer it won't start and displays a message "missing or corrupt file, WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM. I tried F8 when I start the computer but it won't start in Safe Mode and other start options either. I can run the XP installation disk Recovery Console but it seems like its a DOS command in repairing it. I have no knowledge whatsoever in DOS. Can you please help me the step by step procedure and commands to use to repair my system? This is my first time to attempt to repair a damaged system! Thanks a lot in advance!

I have a budget around £700 to spend. I'm looking at Vista Home Premium, Intel core duo/Intel core2duo (not AMD Basically) 2Gb RAM, at least 15" screen.

It will be used for web browsing, email and some light Office Suite work.

I may evolve and use it for photo manipulation or online movies.

Can anyone offer a recommendation?

Sorry if it's a bit vague. I've been reading consumer reviews and have heard about unreliable connectivity to wireless networks with Apple laptops. Just curious to see if these problems are in the minority of cases. Thanks in advance for any responses.

My laptop's DVD drive is a Toshiba SD-R112. The first DVDs I bought were DVD-R of up to 16 speed, and I could burn those, even though my drive only does 1* or 2* burn speed. I got some 8* DVD+R DVDs and none of my programs recoignise them. The DVD packaging says "This media is intended for use with DVD 8* speed drives. Firmware upgrades may be necessary" and I upgraded the firmware to the latest but I still have no luck.
I read reports that this particular CD drive tends to pack it in easily.
Did I buy the wrong discs, or could those dics or my drive be broken?

My laptop was confiscated by the very corrupt Sacramento County sheriff's dept., because they said it was illegal for the serial # to be removed. I haven't seen the alleged defaced serial #, but I do have the receipt for the computer. I bought it at Fry's and there is no reason that I would have for removing the serial #. The sheriff's dept. says that even though I have a receipt for the exact same model (Fujitsu N 6000 series), They will not give me my computer back because they don't have a serial # to identify it as mine. There has to be some kind of electronic serial # or something. They are basically stealing my laptop from me and there is nothing I can do about it. This is not right and now I am out the $1700.00 that I paid for it, not to mention all of my personal photos and very important files. Please help me stop this. The sheriff's dept here is known for their corruption and inmate beatings. I only want them to do what's right. Can they really get away with this? Thank you.

When I turn my laptop off I generally place it on the floor upside down so particles don't get into the vents. But someone told me that if I do that it can be bad for the hard drive, is that true?

My baby nephew spilled sparkling juice onto a few keys a while back and I slacked off to go get it fixed. I used a hair dryer to blow it dry right after... Now sometimes the keys work and sometimes it doesn't? What should I do?
Thanks!
