For a notebook, the Centrino Core 2 Duo is the better choice because it has a few differences that make it more suitable for a laptop. For starters, the Core 2 Duo series is more efficient than their Pentium Dual Core (also called Pentium D) counterparts. This allows the Core 2 Duo to use less power to do the same amount of work than the Pentium D and allows your battery life to be greater. Next, by being more efficient, the Core 2 Duo also throws off less heat, therefore the fan on the notebook heat sink spins less which also uses less power, and emits less noise...plus it won't make your lap as hot

Overall go with Core 2 Duo processors. They're newer, the latest revisions of the Core 2 series are made with a 45nm manufacturing process which reduces heat , they're very stable and are well known for being good for overclocking. They would be more expensive than Pentium processors but that's just because you're getting what you pay for. I myself will be buying a Core 2 Quad E8300 soon which I will be overclocking to hopefully 3.0ghz .

Core Duo 2 is a stronger, faster and more powerful processor. But, depending on price and need, it may not be the better choice. If you are using high performance parts, than the Duo 2 is a definite want. Otherwise, the Dual Core maybe the cheaper and more resourceful choice.
