Do thorough spyware/virus scanning, eliminate any free trial software & extra taskbar/toolbar programs, just to make sure nothing like that is slowing you down- If your version of Vista has the Aero interface, turn that off. And you can try the Readyboost feature, see if that helps - just be careful to find the right kind of USB stick.

But the bottom line is Vista *needs* a fast processor and a lot of RAM! It requires more powerful hardware than XP to run smoothly. And in most cases, you can't upgrade notebook processors after the fact, but you can add more RAM.

It's like asking "how do I make my car go faster without pressing down more on the gas pedal"? Well, that's what makes your car go faster.

All machines are limited in how much total RAM can be installed, but for some that value is really low (like 1 gb), and those machines are simply not good candidates for Vista. In fact for desktops/notebooks, Vista isn't a good choice unless the machine came with it pre-installed. If the machine came with Vista, then definitely max out your RAM :)

There are several things that could slightly increase windows vista performance:

1. Use a partition for your swap file - This will modify the virtual memory settings and it will speed up your computer
2. Defragment your HDD regularly
3. Use a software like CCleaner that cleans your registry and removes unused and temporary files

ReadyBoost

you can access the flash memory on a usb flash drive, compact flash or sd card by plugging it in; helps boost performance. Not all usb sticks are compatible though - here's a guide
