I have a budget around £700 to spend. I'm looking at Vista Home Premium, Intel core duo/Intel core2duo (not AMD Basically) 2Gb RAM, at least 15" screen.

It will be used for web browsing, email and some light Office Suite work.

I may evolve and use it for photo manipulation or online movies.

Can anyone offer a recommendation?

I'd go for the Acer. My husband runs a computer shop and bought me an Acer - it's been really reliable, it's now running Vista without a problem. I use it for pretty much what you've described above and it's great. I would stay away from Dell; HP I can't really comment on as I've not used one but I would say for reliability and value for money so for Acer.

Please take dell out of your list. Hp is best but I can reommend acer as well. We have two in our family and both are excellent machines.

My sister buys both del and hp for the large company she works for and asked her which she would choose between the 2. Only 1 answer and was hp, they have a lot of problems with dell.

We hav a budget 3692wlmi and a higher spec dual core 5612wlmi.

Check out the link below for a fantastic acer well in your budget and also HP from Comet.

I have worked in IT for over 16 years and Dell are cheap and reliable and value for money.

However I must say the after sales support is nothing like what it used to be if fact it's appalling but if you are fairly good with IT you will find Dell a good option for 700 pounds.

Bearing in Mind that Dell have purchased Alienware a PC/laptop manufacture who really know how to build PC's and laptops

a couple of weeks ago, I bought an "Acer" laptopl at Best Buy. I have a Dell desktop at home with XP installed.

Seems to be a real nice computer. It does have Vista, however. I wanted to stay with XP but they don't sell the new ones with anything but Vista.

A computer geek told me an Acer was one of the best.

I have compaq (the same company as HP), it has been very good.
The key using lap top is: do not block the ventilation (it could be behind on under the lap top) as it could heating up quickly, use wooden tray when you are using it not on the table.

Acer or Dell and do not go anywhere near an Apple/Mac unless you have money to throw away

Apple. Get a MacBook; you can run OS X on it (which you can't on any other kind) and if you are *really* determined to waste your investment you can even install Windows or Linux.
