I recently purchaced a hp dv 2046TU Laptop. It has a PC recovery option in the HDD. No disk were provided. It also had a provision of making Rescue Discs. [It required 3DVD (eqivalent of 16CDs) for the rescue. WHAT DO THEY STORE IN IT?? since Win XP requires 1 CD and misc drivers require one CD. Few pgms max one more CD.] I purchased Partition Magic since I was told it is the best and the easiest to use. I do not understand the intricacies of the DOS partition method involving cylinders and heads.

After spending so much money I am at a loss since I will always have the fear of losing valuable data. Partition secures your data by placing it on a seperate partition securing it from viruses and corruption to some extent.

Most importantly how do i use the Win XP Home provided in the rescue disk and the drivers for the web cam, bluetooth etc. The rescue disk cannot be opened.

I wonder why companies make such laptops. Given an option I would never buy HP again.

As long as it's in great condition, is it wise to buy a used laptop from somewhere like ebay?

Any known issues that one should be aware of when buying a used laptop?

I recently had a problem with my Acer laptop which fortunately for me was still under the factory warranty of 1 yr, parts and labor. I know my Platinum Visa has a program which doubles the mfr. warranty on most items I'm sure there are exclusions but I don't believe computers or laptops are excluded? Has anyone ever had a problem with something you bought no longer in the mfr. warranty period and used this program with any success?

How long was the turnaround time between calling and getting your items repaired? I would be interested in knowing, the one I have says to make a copy of your receipts and send them the originals and then when you have a problem you call them to get them involved with the mfr. and getting the item repaired.

I have a Dell Inspiron E1705. I'd like to clean the keyboard--dust, etc, but am not sure what the best way to do it is? I haven't spilled anything on it, I just want to clean up the loose stuff that gets in between the keys, etc. Thanks!

My daughter just bought her very first laptop. She is in Naval school, just graduated basic training. She was so proud of herself, able to buy it on her own, with her own money! She had an accident this morning, and it fell on the floor. It seems the monitor is the part broken. Being on base, no car, funds low, does anyone have any suggestions? I told her to ask around to see if there are any computer techs on base who might help. I thought maybe finding a computer repair shop in her area, and make the connection. She is just so upset right now, she cannot think of any solutions. It was her only outlet to connect with family and friends on her "off time". I know it sounds grim, but does anyone have any other suggestions? Thanks for your time!

Would anyone have any idea as why my laptop gets frozen after using it for only 5 minutes or so. I can't use the keyboard & the mouse pointer gets frozen & the only way to get over it is by turning the power off.

Couple of days back, I couldn't EVEN turn the power on but someone I manage to do after a while & at least managed to use the Safe Mode with Networking & transferred all my files using the wireless Network onto my PC (& hence backed-up all my data). Afterwards, the power was turning on but the screen used to get frozen at a point where Windows XP banner first comes up (when it's loading & has the status bar underneat it).

Now the power seems to be turning on & am being able to get to the desktop but within 5 min. or so using it, keyboard & mouse gives up.

I've recently had hard disk changed, so hightly doubted if it's anything to do with it. How about the CPU fan or RAM chip fault, or something else ??? Any idea.

I'm using Windows XP Pro. SP2 & has 256 MB of RAM.

I have a Dell laptop. We took it to best buy, thinking the charger was broke which was why it wouldnt turn on. I found out though, that its not the charger. The guy took a new battery and put it in, and the "dash lights" (like the lights on he dashboard of a car, the lights at the top of the laptop near the screen.) THose came on, i know nothing about computers, does anyone maybe have SOME sort og idea of what might be wrong?
