I have a Dell laptop. We took it to best buy, thinking the charger was broke which was why it wouldnt turn on. I found out though, that its not the charger. The guy took a new battery and put it in, and the "dash lights" (like the lights on he dashboard of a car, the lights at the top of the laptop near the screen.) THose came on, i know nothing about computers, does anyone maybe have SOME sort og idea of what might be wrong?

If the lights come on, but the screen is still black/blank the HD could be hosed, might need to be re installed the OS that is (operating system)

Try to listen to hear if the hard drive is spinning, if not the HD could be gone. Laptops are touchy and the jarring and vibrations they take while being moved around are hard on the HD. Not sure why Best Buy did not test the HD for you.

IMHO taking your laptop to Best Buy for repair was a mistake. However, you are making up for it by posting here :).

A little more information could help tremendously here. However, it's tough to get every detail a tech could use in a forum to diagnose a pc when you don't know what we need.

Assuming that you pushed the power button after the battery was installed (i must be a genius ;)), did the laptop make any kind of noise or did only the lights come on without any indication that it was even remotely trying to start "boot up".

Did your laptop run very hot before this started? Heat is a killer of electronic components and could easily burn out the laptops CPU which would definitely cause it to not respond at all. Also, the motherboard or main board on the laptop that holds the CPU may have also burned out. I have personal experience with Dell PC's at work where some of the little components "capacitors" on the motherboard burst. This is a known issue with Dell for certain model pc's where the Dell was shipped a bad batch of capacitors for their motherboards. I'm not sure if it affected laptops, but it might be worth a try. Even if you're out of warranty, if it falls under this issue they will replace it.

Good luck!

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the first thing that you did wrong was that you bought a Dell. They are WAY overrated in my own humble opinion. Over the years I've bought more computers than I can remember easily and I've never had a Dell that was worth the money. Sorry.

When you are ready to buy a new system, go to www.stupidcheapcomputers.net. I buy all of my stuff from them.

I bought a complete, new system from them with a warranty for LESS than it would cost me to build it myself or order a custom one from the manufacturer. You can use my frequent buyer code: ATX926. That will get an additional 10% discount at checkout.

I have NEVER had any problems with anything that they have sold me and their customer service is outstanding. Those guys blow my mind.

Good luck!

How long have you had it?
Where did you buy it?
Is it under warranty?
If the problem is too complicated and you have to spend some money, maybe you would be better off replacing the thing. This might be a good excuse to upgrade to something newer.
Try contacting Dell.

Try with another good charger.
If LT lites are still off while they are on with new battery then you maybe need new mother board because high possible the adapter connection was broken, or burnt. Does any liquid drop on keyboard or power surcharge?
