Keys? Do you mean like software keys?
Well, there's not much to say. They are necessary. Not only for copy protection, but keys provide a means to upgrade trial versions of software without having to download a new version.
You only need to enter the key once, so it's no big deal. It isn't like old DOS games where you had to input a code everytime you wanted to play the game.
