Desktops - September 2006

I just installed an 80 gig West Dig internal drive as a slave into my compaq presario. The pc only reads it as a 32gig. I tried the dataguard 11 cd but it didn't change anything. Anyone want to walk me through this

I'm a PC guy, but would like to make the switch to an Imac. Does anyone know when the Leopard version will be available? If I buy an Imac today, will I get a free upgrade when it comes out? Thanks.

About 2 weeks ago i got a message after boot up saying that my cmos battery was low - this resulted in my boot-up sequence changing (instead of the text identifying all the hardrives, cd-roms etc i got a screen with the logo "msi the link to the future") and windows forgot the date and time but everything still worked. However now my computer will not run windows, it always restarts itself just before the windows logo appears (the bit with windows xp and the green or blue? colours going across it) or if it doesn't restart then it just sits there doing nothing. I have tried booting off my other hardrive but no success. I have also tried reinstalling windows but after the very 1st bit where it says "press f6 if u want to install raid and scsi drivers" it then goes blank and there is no more text on the windows install screen. I have 2 copies of xp and both discs to exactly the same. So i was thinking that this problem was due to my cmos battery running out? any help would be appreciated

Ok I need a time shut off?
Ok i have a desk top and i have windows XP. Now evryone has been fighting for computer time. i want to know if there is a way that i can make a folder for each of my family memebers with there own codes ofcorse and after there time is up for the computer to save there data or give a 10 minute warning to save there data and shut down not allwoing them to get back on until the next day. Can anyone help me with this?

There isn't a disk in it and it just keeps coming open. I've rebooted my computer thinking that would help but it continues. I have a Dell 4400, about 4 years old. Any suggestions?

I recently got this sharp little PC case that has a metallitc blue and *silver colored* front bezel on the front. However, somebody swapped the original CD drive and replaced it with an ugly beige unit which spoils the whole front piece of the PC.
I asked a local PC vendor about selling me a silver colored drive (the faceplate), but he said that all CD drives come in only two colors - beige/white and black! I hoping that he's totally wrong. BTW, I've noticed that this silver coating is on so much OEM electronic stuff. Basically, it's just a kind of paint to make the plastic parts appear to be metallic. Someone help me find silver colored CD drives so that I can prove this guy wrong and the finishing touch to my PC case.

having trouble installing a pci video card, a ati radeon 9250 pci 256 mb, i have set bios to pci video. I have no picture/display, but yet no beeps indicating no video card or trouble with it. has any one run across this or has any other suggestions. I have tried loading it with another card(an agp). it starts normally but still doesn't id the card. i have an older board an intel d815eea, running a p3 866mhz, 512 mb memory. Help!!

I installed a media card reader in my computer tower. Since I have only one mother board USB header to use, I disconnected my front USB cable, thus deactivating my front USBs and connected my media card reader. When I powered up my computer the media card reader worked fine, however I discovered that my optical mouse was disabled. Why did I loose power in my optical mouse? How can I restore my optical mouse? HELP!

I have managed to remove all my other shortcuts to the start menu but I can't remove the Recycle Bin Icon, eventhough there is one pinned to the start menu. Is there a way of doing this?

emachines [amd athlon xp processor]1640 tower doesnt power up at all! looked inside for fuse to replace but dont see anything i recognize as a fuse. no light on power button /thing is dead. any clues? powerless condition happened suddenly=after shutooff next time i turned on-no power.can this be result of virus?

I know, I know(!) this is a simple question and one often asked, but I'm coming more from the angle of is anyone going to do anything about it.

I realise on a Windows PC that drivers and programs are loaded with the start-up routine, but surely it doesn't have to be this way. Why can't the computer just switch-on and then load what it needs on a demand basis.

You wouldn't accept it if your car took 3-5 mins to start would you? Not to mention the environmental consequences of everyone leaving their computers on because of the broadband revolution to take phone calls and video messaging.

What I want to know is anyone able or working on an instant-computer and will this ever be released. Surely the market is huge, especially as we're heading towards a thin-client scenario.

My hard drive is toast. I've been told that the data is lost. If I know that the police can recover data from a crashed drive for evidence, but can it be done for an individual who's only crime was not backing up files especially the purchased music files. Thankfully I burned all my photographs to CD about a week earlier. Boy, I'm an idiot for not burning my music onto CDs when I had the chance.

I just bought a used computer and it died in 5 min. I have flashing light on monitor. I have tried monitor on another computer so it works. Motherboard has the video output jack, However i have changed AGP and PCI Video cards with the same results. I checked the 5 and 12 volts coming out of the power supply. They are OK. What is problem?

Im trying to choose between two different video cards. The first one is the ATI RADEON X850 XT PCI-E 256MB VIVO 256 BIT. The second is the VisionTek Xtasy Radeon X1300 - graphics adapter - Radeon X1300 - 512 MB. Does anyone know which is better? Thanks all.
