Probably not. The Windows upgrade packages are meant to save most of the current information.
I am assuming that you want to install Windows XP. You need to check that your current hardware is suitable. This would include having enough memory and space on your hard drive. The easiest way to do this is to run a hardware check program from Microsoft before you attempt the upgrade.
The general rule of thumb is you need 128MB of RAM, a 300 MHz processor, 1.5 to 2 GB of hard drive room, an 800X600 high color Video (256 color will pass, but barely) and a BIOS date newer than 1/1/2000.
You might be better to just save for a new computer. See the site below:
If and only if the hardware is suitable (or upgraded to make it suitable), then you should backup your entire system. Read-Write DVD's or CD's might be best.

When you run the installation program from a cd , In the very begining you get an option to Upgrade or a new Install. If on your screen it shows these options , and If you choose Upgrade then you will not loose any data, any programs on your computer.

Windows 98 can be upgraded to XP...you will probably not lose anything, but be sure to back up just in case.

Make sure the software (XP) is an "upgrade" version.
It may be more economical to buy a new computer, but you must have all data and original cds for the software you wish to install.

Only one other poster has mentioned that you need to make sure your PC can handle an upgrade to XP. THIS IS A REAL IMPORTANT POINT! It has been my experience machines that were designed to run W98 simply aren't fast enough to make using WIN XP a viable option. They are just too old and simply don't have the 'horsepower'.

Start- all programs - accessories - system tools- Files and settings transfer wizard.
Use this before you upgrade. And the answer to losing everything is no if you upgrade and yes if you clean install.

flow on your administration panel and reckoning on what OS you have, i'm assuming XP, flow to overall performance and Maintainence and then as quickly as you enter which you would be waiting to make valuable a buttom to do a kit restoration on your precise left. click on that and in basic terms stick to the prompts and click on the needed date.
