Its because you are having lots of things and icons on your desktop. Try to remove the unused icons and remove the games and unnecessary items on your computer . If this dont work just reinstall the operaing software .

Try the basics first.

How long has it been since you've run Windows disk cleanup? If you're like me, it's been too long. Go to start, programs, accessories, system tools, disk cleanup and follow the instructions. If you've not done a disck clean-up, then it's an even bet you've not done a defrag lately either. When you are done with the diskcleanup, do the next item down in the system tools list, disk defragmentation. Now your system will be in the best position to run with the load you've given it.

Now, think about how much load you're putting on it. It takes books after books after books to even start to slow down a computer, but it only takes a full-length DVD download to tie things up for hours. If you have a couple hundred photos on your harddrive, then they're taking space that could be used for running the program faster (get a flash disk to keep lots of pictures or short home movies on and let your CPU be free to do what you want it to do). The same argument holds for movies or music. Be sure you quickly download then upload to your ipod or flash drive and delete them off the hard drive.

Other things that can slow down your computer include viruses, adware and worse. If you don't have Norton or an equivalent you are running your computer on its last legs. Take it to someone who can clean it up. If you have an older version of Norton or its equivalent you will also need an ad-aware program (a good one goes by that name; Spybot is another) to get rid of cookies and ads you don't want tying up your system.

Hey

There could be various reasons for this. But some basic issues.

Firstly, clear the temporary files in your computer and clean them periodically. You have to clean your house / office regularly to be able to move freely.. remember! Secondly, uninstall all the unused programs. Thirdly, stop the auto-starting programs if not necessary, they hog the system's processing power and memory. You can check that by looking at your taskbar near the clock in PCs and running programs in a MAC.
This takes care of the maintenance issues. Last step of maintenance is cleaning the house which means, formatting the HDD and re-installing the OS.

Second issue is hardware - maybe your computer is old to be running Windows XP SP2 and needs an upgrade. I wouln't be able to advise on that as I am not aware of your present configuration.

Cheers!

Its because you are having lots of things and icons on your desktop, delete cookies, history, empty recycle bin, remove unused icons, keep your files in other drives. Or you can do a disk clean up from start/programs/accessories/system tools/disk cleanup and choose drive c (Usually, or where is your operating system), your disk may be full, try uninstalling some programs.

Even, If you are having problem, Install a fresh copy of Windows XP

Overloading of programs alwasys delay the refresh. Type msconfig in start - run and press enter. See the startup programs and try to remove programs which you are not using every time when the computer starts. Secondly remove all unnecessary icons from the desktop. Thirdly re-organise your files so that all stay in their proper folders. Fourthly de-fragment your harddisk. Last but most important scan & delete any viruses / spyware from your computer.

Its more or less because the system just got out of doing a memory intensive task, such as gaming or video editing. even though the program is shut down it doesn't mean that the program code is out of the memory it was using and the computer has to clear it out to use the space. and windows uses system memory to cache the icon data instead of the video memory. But not to wory, the next version of windows, dubed Windows Vista, will take care of that verry problem because it will utalize the graphics card to do meny things.
