The obvious option is to drag it over to (on top of) your "unused desktop shortcuts" icon. But if you have removed all your other shortcuts, I assume that one is gone. You should be able to either left click and then hit the delete button on your keyboard or right click and pick delete from the pop-up menu. You'll probably get a pop-up message something like "doing this will only remove the icon from your desktop, it won't actually remove the function." But that's ok, that's what you want. Click OK (or yes or proceed, etc) and it should disappear. Another option is to go into Control Panel, double-click on Display icon, pick Desktop tab, click on Customise, in picture box of desktop icons click on Recycle Bin and then hit delete. Then "OK" or "apply" all the way back out to Control Panel.

If you're using Windows XP, the Recycle Bin is meant to be permanently displayed on the desktop. You can edit your registry as one answerer suggested, but the absolute easiest way to clear the icon is to get Microsoft Tweak UI. This is a FREE power toy developed by the XP engineering team that allows you to safely remove the Recycle Bin icon. It also gives you a lot of other controls over XP that aren't available any other way.
The first link is to the Microsoft power toys home page. It shows all the power toys available for XP. The second link is for the Tweak UI only.

To remove Recycle Bin from the desktop:
1. Run REGEDIT.
2. Find NAMESPACE key in left pane (HKEY_Local_Macine \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ Current Version \ Explorer \ Desktop \ Namespace)
3. Expand NAMESPACE (click '+' box)
4. Delete the value RECYCLE BIN in right pane

right click on your desktop then go down to the option that says "properties." A window will appear called "display properties." There will be tabs across the top that read, "Themes, Desktop, Screen Saver, etc." Click the "desktop, tab. You'll see a picture of a computer screen, and underneath that theres a list, titled: Background. Under the list, theres a button called, "CUSTOMIZE DESKTOP." Click that. Inside there, there are the options to remove my computer, recycle bin, internet explorer, and my network places, from your desktop

I think if you right click on the icon and then scroll down on the drop down menu to 'delete' that should do it.
