We had a power surge and the computer wouldn't turn back on, we changed the power supply and it still doesn't work. The little thing we think is the hard drive is black at the end, do you think it got fried or can we still salvage what's on it? I checked the outlets so it's not that, what else could it be?

If I use the free version of killdisk and wipe out all data and drivers, what do I do next to help start my computer clean again?
Do I just install Windows XP and will that make all the drivers workable again?
Also, can I install windows vistas instead of XP after formatting?

i had to print name cards as a favour and taped them with masking tape to a4 to make it easier. this worked fine till a piece of masking tape removed itself mid-print! The paper then got wedged - I KNOW you are not supposed to pull the paper out the front but yes i did it :(
I took the back off, found and removed said piece of tape. Now the printer has gone haywire! The black cartridge (it was printing colour for the name things) is running streaky after first page of print but i think the colour one is fine. i removed it to fill it up, but sometimes it says new cart. installed when i haven't and i've tried to clean it to no avail. It prints the test page everytime i turn it on. Any ideas? Have i knocked something or cartridge in wrong? Can i clean it better?
thanks

Hi guys.
I had my pc for about a year-working fine till now. (its an Asus motherboaRD,AMD 64 3200+,2x512 ram ddr). I was watchign a film on it last nite, was working fine. This morning switched it on as normal to check e-mail etc.
It bootted up fine, but then before it went to the windows logging screen it powered off. Clicking on the power button didnt work. to switch it back on again, i had to remove it from the mains and connect it again. Switched it back on and again it powered off at the same point.
I havent had the time yet to do any troubleshooting as i had to go to work, but i tried to log-in via safe mode, i log in normally and as soon as it tries to load window's it powers of again (no blue screen no nothing, just switches off and cant' switch it on until i remove it from the mains and reconnect it). i checked the CPU fan seems to be working fine.
I've heard some stuff on dodgy MOBO capacitors, but havent checked... any ideas anyone had something similar happen?
