You can add a bigger hard disk, but you certainly need to double the RAM you presently have, to at least 512. Try running a free scan from Crucial to check the type of ram you have and how much more you can add.

You might also want to run a complete free checkup from Belarc Advisor. It will tell you everything you currently have on the computer - you can print it for future reference. It often comes in handy if you are planning an upgrade.

Look up your motherboard and see what kind of memory it needs, there are lots of different kinds. The motherboard documentation will also tell you how much memory it supports, don't bother buying more than that.

If your computer is old, the disk is probably IDE (wide flat gray cable) . Buy and EIDE or IDE disk to replace it, lots of newer disks are SATA. You could just add the new disk to the box and have two disks in it, the IDE cable almost certainly has a spare connector.
