Test the operating system and all drives. Make sure it will burn a cd/dvd. and has at least a 20 GB hd. The main thing to look for on Presario's of that vintage is the ability to add RAM. Some of them max out at 386 mb, and it just isn't enough and cannot be fixed.

check with your son what he needs - word processing, games, music, video, mobile wireless, bluetooth etc and then make a choice.
you will get laptops which can take you to the moon but that would be of no use since you just want to go to the grocery.
it is quite possible your 2002 model C will also do what he wants to do, so don't get carried away by the fancy gizmos or specifications. ask the salesguy at the computer store to cut the chase and focus on the basics to meet your needs and ask a lot of "why do i need this" and you will save money and get a funcitonal machine. .

It should power up, run windows. Display should have no obvious flaws. Power supply should come with it, software CD's are a bonus. Ask if CD/DVD reader works and ask for a demo. Ask if wireless works and ask for a demo.
Hope your son has reasonable expectations. 8-)
