My daughter (bless her) droppoed my Acer travelmate and broke the screen..
The PC probably sustained other damage, but actually appears to work OK, I have all files, and all programs appear to work OK....

However, It turns itself off straight after the last stage of booting up if I connect an external monitor. The only way around this, I have discovered, is to F8 during boot and boot in VGA mode...And then the graphics are unbearable. I dont have the money to fix it, and as the PC appears to work OK, I just need to be able to get better resolution...The VGA mode prevents IE from displaying webpages properly, etc...

Ive tried playing around with the scren settings under control panel... but no joy.... I guess windows has already set the device to be low res..

HELP !!

If not, I've heard that non-conductive/non-corrosive liquids exist that I can hypothetically immerse a computer in to keep it cool. Is this even possible?

If not, then what is the maximum, safe time limit you could leave your desktop on? Please also include the conditions (like below 70 F or not)

I only have a few questions. I'm not sure if they are actual problems, or if that is standard for external harddrives.

First question: If my computer needs to reboot, due to software updates and I forget to turn off my external hard drive, my computer says that the boot disk has changed, when it starts up, then I have to press F1 to continue. Is this something that I can get rid of?

Second question: If I forget to turn it off and do a cold boot on my computer, it will say invalid oprating system. I have to turn off my external harddrive and reboot my computer. Is this normal as well?

Ok, I do have another question.

Third queston: When I first turn on my external harddrive, the computer scans all of the files on it and asks which media I want to play the files on. Does it have to scan the external harddrive everytime I turn it on?

Seagate 80 Gb external USB.

So times it freezes at the Windows Xp loading screen where that green thing passes through the bar. Im not thinking its my CD, but my hard drive or harware.

My sisters computer turns on, but when it reaches the windows xp loading screen it completely freezes, and you need to restart the computer. I'm thinking about just restarting the whole computer and erasing everything. How do I clear the whole computer and start out fresh again?

***I do realize that technology will change by the time I decide to purchase.***

I have decided to purchase a new computer (between spring '07 and fall '07) and now I am looking for some info to help me make a few decisions.

1. What type of processor is better?

I will be buying a Dell and now, I have the choice of an Intel Core 2 Duo Processor E6400 or an AMD Athalon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor. There may be more choices in a few months, but which out of these two are better? And by better, I mean performance wise. I don't care about the name/brand...I just want something that is going to give me the best performance for my money.

2. I also need a CD/DVD drive that will read and write both CD's and DVD's.

Will a 48x CD-RW/DVD Combo Drive allow me to read and write both CD's and DVD's? If so, is that better than having a 16x DVD+/-RW Drive? (I know that the 16x DVD+/-RW Drive will allow me to read and write both CD's and DVD's.)

Thank you for all of your help!

When I burn a disc from an iTunes playlist, it skips. It hasn't always. I've downloaded what I think is the latest driver for my computer's CD burner (a Dell Inspiron 5100). I've cleaned the CD player/burner on the computer with a CD player cleaner. What else can I do?
