My sisters computer turns on, but when it reaches the windows xp loading screen it completely freezes, and you need to restart the computer. I'm thinking about just restarting the whole computer and erasing everything. How do I clear the whole computer and start out fresh again?

Oh and it also says currupted files are missing on the computer which help the computer run. That may be the reason why the computer is acting like this and not starting up properly. Theres not much important files on the computer as it is, so I dont mind just starting the computer again but whats the safe way in doing this?

There are so many things this could be. But reading between the lines it sounds like;
1. this machine has been working just fine for a while
2. no hardware changes were made recently
3. someone may have installed or changed sofware recently

I suspect it's a sofware configuration (possibly a video driver) because you know enough to suggest fixing it by doing an operating system reinstallation. Sometimes it makes alot of sense to do this, but first I would change back whatever you changed most recently.

In order to get past the windows screen you will need to go into what they call "safe" mode, which is basically the same as regular mode, but it starts up with a simpler set of configurations (you can always start in regular mode later, doing this doesn't remove or break anything).

If you don't want to spend hours debugging -and I wouldn't blame you- a reinstallation could do the trick, but don't do that without first thinking of the important files on the computer, and what you would loose if you deleted everything. It may motivate you to spend more time debugging. Or not.

But like I said, this could be any number of things.

See if you can boot the computer into Safe Mode with Network, usually by pressing F8 during boot.

Once you are in, try downloading and installing Avast Antivirus and, if successful, let it do a boot scan at the next boot to check for viruses. If it finds some, use Repair or Delete to get rid of them.

Two other programs you might want to try downloading and installing are Spybot and Adaware to check for spyware and adware.

Adaware: http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10399602.html?tag=lst-0-1

If these don't work, or you just want to start over, see if the computer came with a Quickstart or Reinstallation CD as that will make it much easier to rebuild the computer. Once you find it, you should boot off that CD and follow the instructions.
