The socket refers to the processor pins, for compatablility in upgrading the processor,,,
To build a good pc find the highest processor MHZ, With a high FSB,,, Get a decent graphix card at least a 512, and your good to go.
( the duel core "socket", would be the best on the market at this time)...

Socket type and processor go hand in hand, so yes, choosing a socket type is as important as choosing a cpu. What boards use what socket and chipsets, and what are the benefits of that board over another socket type. After you do a good comparison of boards/socket types/chipsets, then you are prepared to shop for the cpu itself, depending on your funds and needs.
An easy way to figure out what is a good buy is to check out gaming computer manufacturers, and see what they are putting in their machines. (alienware, dell XPS, polywell poly, cyberpower among others) Some of the newer socket types for 2 core systems are Socket T (lga775) for intel, and AMD2 for Amd. You need to also consider what chipset may best fit your needs. Some do things better then others. Nvidia Nforce chipset? Ati? Intel? There are quite a few choices. Some support Crossfire or SLI, others don't.
If you go with a 775 intel, or a AM2, you will have a few years before everything is obsolete.

I have a personal preference for AMD processors. They now have a new socket, AM2, that is replacing socket 939.
Asus has a few AM2 motherboards and the AMD Athlon 64x2 processor family is preferred by most gamers.
Both are readily available from newegg.com and other on line retailers. As always, buy the best motherboard and processor you can afford within the above categories.
Socket AM2 also uses DDR2 memory and I suggest PC6400 (800MHz) memory installed in matching pairs (dual channel).
I have provided a Link to newegg.com. Just look to the left side of the screen and click on the category you wish to shop...Good luck!

Socket? Not sure what that is but if it means CPU then the biggest the better. With the high end gaming you will need it. Also VISTA was launched today and the new games will demand high performance in your CPU's. Get lots of RAM and Video as well. ATI has a Radion with 512 now. Duo core is best for Vista. I recommend Intel for this. Do the research on the net.

Socket 7
Just kidding. For a gamming PC i would recommend the AMD Athlon processors. I forget what Socket they are called. But compared to Pentiums they clock faster and are extreeeeeemly affordable. I use a Turion processor in my laptop and i can run world of Warcraft without any lag. It is only a 1.6Ghz processor to so that tells you something. AMD is doing something right!
