***I do realize that technology will change by the time I decide to purchase.***

I have decided to purchase a new computer (between spring '07 and fall '07) and now I am looking for some info to help me make a few decisions.

1. What type of processor is better?

I will be buying a Dell and now, I have the choice of an Intel Core 2 Duo Processor E6400 or an AMD Athalon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor. There may be more choices in a few months, but which out of these two are better? And by better, I mean performance wise. I don't care about the name/brand...I just want something that is going to give me the best performance for my money.

2. I also need a CD/DVD drive that will read and write both CD's and DVD's.

Will a 48x CD-RW/DVD Combo Drive allow me to read and write both CD's and DVD's? If so, is that better than having a 16x DVD+/-RW Drive? (I know that the 16x DVD+/-RW Drive will allow me to read and write both CD's and DVD's.)

Thank you for all of your help!

1. The Intel Core 2 Duos are superior to the Athlon X2s, but AMD is supposed to release a new processors this summer that might overtake the Core 2 Duos. This is really a question you need to ask when you buy the computer, becaue as you already said, the technology will change by then.

2. You will need the 16x DVD+/-RW, the 48x CD-RW/DVD will only read DVDs not burn them. Don't be fooled by the 48x compared to the 16x, the 48x refers to the speed it burns CDs, the 16x DVD burner will also burn CDs at that speed, but burns DVDs at 16x.

2. CD-RW/DVD Combo Drive can write cd and dvd but cannot write dvd ,just can write cd
DVD+/-RW Drive can read and write cd and dvd
so it is better that you choose DVD+/-RW Drive

You sir have been a sufferer of Dell's crappy merchandise inspection, they gave you a clean pc with a defective tensepersistent. end what your doing on your pc IMMEDIATLY. Get your Flash drives/Cd Burner out now, decrease back up any application, date you desire. call dell and have this element shipped decrease back, and whilst your at it tell them you refuse to pay for transport, they're going to %. up the tab, thinking they bought you a defective pc. playstation : Be waiting for dell's terrible excuse for tech help. I reccomend having each and all the advice they sent to you which ones includes your pc: client id#, Serial#'s, etc.
