OK we bought a computer in 2000, so will need a new one probably in the next year. Last time we bought at the wrong time and then ended up having to add XP later which has caused a bit of trouble. We're not techie! Should we buy now or wait til some new version comes out again? We're still working on Office 2000, but don't know if we should go to 2003 or wait til 2007 is out.

I have done a system restore and I have deleted some programs that I have heard will sometimes cause this problem (ie. itunes, etc.). Any other thoughts?

I have 2 PCs saying they have the same IP address every time I turn them both on. (A previous DSL question)...I'm going to configure 1 PC to "use the following IP address" vs "obtaining an IP address automatically. My question is- if I assign 1 PC an IP address of the next higher last number, do I have to do anything in the "WINS" and "DNS" tabs after doing that. Or do I just assign an IP address and restart PC?

Here is an example of my settings (numbers are not exactly, but the last 2 octets are
IP add 344.300.1.50
Subnet Mask 555.555.0.0
Default gateway 344.300.0.1
DHCP & DNS Server 344.300.0.1

Also brand new to this, how do I communicate to people after reading their answers?

I just got DSL. Whatever PC I turned on first and accesses the internet is the one that works great. The other PC comes up with an IP address error. (There is an IP address conflict with another system on the network) is coming up on the 2nd computer being turned on.

I have a D-Link DSS-16+ 10/100 Fast Ethernet Switch that I'm using. It works as I've tested it with both PCs individually. Once I turn on the 2nd PC, and it's at the desktop, I get the IP conflict error (above).

I've tried ipconfig /release and renew, but that's not working either. Whatever PC I have on first works, but am I missing something? Or should I do something different in the TCP/IP settings. When I did an IPconfig, the same IP address both PCs (but only the one that was turned on first, the other one shows up all zeros, 0.0.0.0, etc)

Both PCs work great individually, hooked directly from the DSL equip, or through my switch. But not both of them at the same time. Any suggestions.

I am trying to figure out what processor to buy, either the AMD Athlon Xp 2200 processor or the AMD Sempron 2600 processor? These two processors are the only two compatable processors left on the market for socket A motherboards. The first one is the latest processor while the second has a faster FSB.

I had originally assumed that all of the extra 300 watts was wasted, but a friend's Thermatake PS that shows wattage used (if its correct) shows much less actually being used. Better to plan for expansion yes, but I don't like to waste, and its noiser and hotter with larger supplies.

If so, have you repeatedly had to take it in to get it fixed because it was displaying an error code? Please share your experience.
