theres 3 general types of monitors
crt
flatscreen crt
and flatscreen
crt are the ooold kind bulbous glass front with huge case, get hot, have small connector plug, usually blue
flatscreen crt are cooler, and the glass panel on the front is actually flat and not bulbous. These use the same connections and are generally just as bulky, but have faster response times and qualities
finally flatscreens are the nice tablet size, usually lcd but there are fancy types like plasma out there. Very expensive, very nice, very crisp, use dvi port to connecto to cpomupter, wider and usually marked blue or grey.

Both are "CRT" or cathode ray tubes. One has a curvature to the screen and the other is a "flat" tube. These are old technology, but they are still available and fairly inexpensive to buy. The older curved type tubes are a little harder to find. The most common types today are LCD or liquid crystal diode monitors. These are on all of the laptops made today. They are popular for the desktop crowd too because the are thin and take up much less room on the top of your desk.
