On my LAN i can use a computers hostname instead of its IP address to refer to it, but how does this work? Nslookup doesnt work with the hostnames, so its not using DNS. Is it something to do with NetBIOS? However it works, is my router the central 'server' for the hostnames?

Does anybody else have this problem like me?? Or what is it??
I have a cordless phone, and every time I answer someone's call, my WiFi connection on my laptop is getting lost. I have a wireless N router from a Netgear. It is very cheap compare to a leading brands like Linksys or D-link. Maybe because it was cheapest brand, it does not have stable signal or something? Any suggestions?

I'm trying to connect to the internet on a computer with Windows 98.

I have a computer already connected with Windows XP (the connection works great).

The DSL router has a cable going to the switch and there are ethernet cables going from the switch to the Windows 98 computer and to the XP computer.

The gateway IP is correct and I can ping the XP computer from the 98 machine but I can't access any websites.

What is the problem?

I just got a new NetGear wireless internet adapter for my laptop. When I set it up, I was picking up anywhere from 6-20% on my college's wireless network (from a couple miles down the road), but they were asking for a password. So, I called the girl at the computer center, and she told me a password, but I'm not sure I typed it in right.

Anyways, my question is: At what percent should I be able to use this network? How do I know it's not working because the percentage is too low? Could it be something else?

I recently bought a laptop so I can work at home. We already have a PC with a BT Business Broadband router but it isn`t wireless and the main user is reluctant to get a new wireless router. Is there an add on that will enable me to transmit the signal around the house so I can use the internet wirelessly when necessary, without it overruling the current router that is being used?

I have installed a Linksys Wireless-B WUSB11 adapter for the desktop and an Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG is pre-installed for the laptop. I have them connected but the desktop doesn't seem to be sending anything. Firewalls are turned off, no WEP key, IP addresses set to 1.2.3.129 and 1.2.3.130 respectively. I have also tried obtaining the IP address automaticaly but the desktop still doesn't seem to be sending any packets at all. From the laptop, I can see that it is sending packets but not receiving any from the desktop. Can anyone help? I am not trying to share an Internet connection, and I am also NOT using a router.

i'm running a Linksys wireless-B router with WPA security, and my laptop picks it up fine, but it always gets stuck on "acquiring network address". Usually i have to restart my router, cable modem, or laptop or some combination just to get it to connect. what's wrong with this?
