I'm trying to connect to the internet on a computer with Windows 98.

I have a computer already connected with Windows XP (the connection works great).

The DSL router has a cable going to the switch and there are ethernet cables going from the switch to the Windows 98 computer and to the XP computer.

The gateway IP is correct and I can ping the XP computer from the 98 machine but I can't access any websites.

What is the problem?

Check your setting for the Defalt Gateway on the Win98 machine.
Also, try to post or search for this question on Computing.net as I remeber seeing this question there you might have a more detailed answer.

1: did you add all the protocols in
Network settings/new 98 box. DNS must be added
manually along with any others you want. If so the
first thing I would do is clean out the reg of
everything left behind from the anti spyware and the
proxy ware. Give Karen's Power Tools a try. AT:
http://www.karenware.com/powertools/powertools.asp
The below both work great, all her programs are free I
use them all. All small and install auto to the same
directory.
Registry Pruner Remove unneeded entries from
Windows' Registry.
Registry Ripper Extract portions of Windows'
Registry, and save them to a file.
In the past I have had the same problem. I case I
had old reg settings that blocked internet access and
the other 2 times I had to Uninstall the Network [say
no to any reboot] after all are uninstalled Turn it
Off and pull the Nic card. Start it, let it rebuild
everything. Off install the card, reboot 98 installs
it, then go add the protocols you need before you
connect the cat or wifi card.
Hope this helps

Be sure you have a DSL router and not just a DSL modem....plugging an Ethernet DSL modem into a switch does not enable connection sharing. A DSL connection by itself is designed for one computer. When you use a router, your DSL connection thinks the router is 'the computer' connected to it, but the router is able to do some magic and share the connection among up to 250 or so devices, and the OS won't matter. As long as the device has an Ethernet adapter and DHCP-enabled TCP/IP you are good to go.

If you have a 'dialer' that you have to invoke on your XP computer (knows as PPPoE) you will need to set the router up for PPPoE with your username and password. If you don't have a 'dialer' on your XP box you can pretty much hook stuff up as described in the docs for the router and go.

Let's assume for a moment that you are already working with a router here. First, check that the 98 machine has DHCP enabled. Second, check that your network looks a little like this (substitute the IP addresses as necessary):

Router: 192.168.1.1

WinXP PC
IP - 192.168.1.2 (first 3 octets should match router)
Mask - 255.255.255.0
GATEWAY - 192.168.1.1 (or whatever the router's IP address is)

Win98 PC
IP -- 192.168.1.3 (first 3 octets match rotuer, last octet is different from anything else on the network)
Mask -- 255.255.255.0
GATEWAY -- 192.168.1.1 (or whatever the router's IP address is)

If you see that the IP address of the XP box that is connecting to the internet starts is anything other than 10.something or 192.168.something.something then you aren't dealing with a DSL router but a DSL modem; time to go router shopping.

Assuming your IP addresses all line up:

Try to ping the router's LAN address from each machine. If that works, then your LAN is OK.

Next, ping 4.2.2.2 from each machine. If that works, then your internet connection is OK.

Next, try to browse a website from each computer. If that works...well...if not, check the DNS server settings on each machine. You can use 4.2.2.2 on each pretty safely but you should have them set to be configured by the router.

You're gateway sounds like the problem. Without the gateway you cant access the internet. Go into your router, or to the PC that is working and look for the gateway. then copy it onto the 98

Read The Friendly Manual (RTFM) for your switch and follow ALL the installation instructions (like, use the Switch Installation CD with 98 and older) and “How To's” to the letter.

Still Stuck?

Call the manufacturer for tech support. Then, call your ISP, that's what they do.
