I have installed a Linksys Wireless-B WUSB11 adapter for the desktop and an Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG is pre-installed for the laptop. I have them connected but the desktop doesn't seem to be sending anything. Firewalls are turned off, no WEP key, IP addresses set to 1.2.3.129 and 1.2.3.130 respectively. I have also tried obtaining the IP address automaticaly but the desktop still doesn't seem to be sending any packets at all. From the laptop, I can see that it is sending packets but not receiving any from the desktop. Can anyone help? I am not trying to share an Internet connection, and I am also NOT using a router.

FIRST. change your IP addresses to a STANDARD Private range. using 1.2.3.x isn't valid! Use 192.168.1.x or 10.0.0.x etc these addresses are reserved for LOCAL networks 1.2.3.x is not a valid local address and can cause confusion. It shouldn't but it can! Be sure the SUBNET is also set correctly. In this case 255.255.255.0 should work just fine. You don't need a gateway unless one of your computers is sharing internet. Then that computers PRIVATE IP becomes the gateway.

Do check to assure both are in AD-HOC mode! Set a static PRIVATE IP on each machine!

First of all both of your network devices have to be in 'ad-hoc'mode and not 'infrastructre' mode.

Second you want to make sure you both devices are on the same channel and use the same SSID (name of the wireless network)

Once your settings are straight, you should be good to go.
