I recently bought a laptop so I can work at home. We already have a PC with a BT Business Broadband router but it isn`t wireless and the main user is reluctant to get a new wireless router. Is there an add on that will enable me to transmit the signal around the house so I can use the internet wirelessly when necessary, without it overruling the current router that is being used?

you would have to have wireless on your laptop. they sell cards for this (fit in the slot on side of laptop) or upgrade to a wireless laptop............so that once you are connected with your pc your laptop will use its connection and you can use it wirelessly.

What you need is a Wireless Access Point or WAP. The problem is that hooking up a WAP and going wireless opens up a whole lot of security issues. There is a device that hooks up to the electric outlet that can be connected to the router that will allow you to access the network by plugging in the corresponding unit to another outlet. This is much more secure. You still need the main users permission but if security is the problem this should help with that point.

For communicating via wireless from your laptop you should have wireless broadband router.. one solution is

Make the real router transparent(i.e transparent bridge)
Buy a Wireless Router(Linksys will be better) and connect to the transparent router and configure your wireless router with the broadband settings available on transparent router.

Wireless router has ports for wired and wireless communication

Check your ISP's website to see if the BT Business Broadband router can be upgraded to a WiFi model.

Then, if so, offer to pay the difference. If not, buy a WiFi router yourself.

TIP: Ask permission to connect it to the owner's router, before you buy.
