Is it possible to have the main computer that's directly connected to the internet modem to customize how much a wireless router can access a certain amount of kbs/sec?

Example: My main computer to dl speed at 100 kb/sec and I want wireless internet to only be able to have up to 20 kb/sec.

Is it possible to do that kind of customization?

My supplier is 'Virgin Media' a cable network. When I try to watch a video on say 'YouTube' it's crazy. 10/15 seconds of buffering, 2 seconds of footage!! Downloading songs is just as frustrating, they download a 10-20Kbts. Surely this is not right? Apparently I have a 2.2 connection or something. Is cable known for being slow. Do I 'share' the cabel with others. Does this mean that if somebody is doing a lot of very heavy downloading it screws it up for everyone? It's just as bad on small, little heard of sites, ones that hardly anyone would visit. Text is ok, banners bad, video terrible. Help please. Thankyou

I have heard that windows xp doesn't have DHCP features. So in this case how a computer running windows xp assigns IP for itself connecting to a network? Does there work APIPA for performing this job? If so, then how? Please explain me in details.

I recently bought wireless TP-link 108mbps. Ive connected all my hardware and software. Everything went to plan then i connected my wireless, it had a strong green signal which means everything is running good. Then i tried connecting to the internet but nothing worked, it says (ACQUARING NETWORK ADDRESS), is it because i have security on with a network key or do i need to keep it manual .. auto ...... any suggestions ?

Thanks.

I want to use a router D-Link DIR-100 at home, but I am not sure, that it will be compatible with my uni-internet.
I have no modem at home. In order to connect to the Internet these parameters need to be configured: 1. static IP, 2. dns-server, 3. gateway.
So, what do you think, can I use this router in this configuration.

Specifically, I am looking for an antenna that will connect to a standard wireless card and is rated for outdoor use. I will most likely mount it on my roof.

This probably seems like a strange question, but I live in a very commercial area in a medium-sized city, and there are literally dozens of unsecured networks in range of my home, even without the extra range such an antenna would offer. I don't always get the greatest signal strength, though.

I have looked around online a bit, and have found a lot of options in the $150-$200 range, but have no idea which antenna might work better than another. Had no idea that they came in so many shapes and sizes!

Also, I do not have a wireless network card to which I can connect an external antenna. I am not sure if it makes a difference which card I use, as long as it has the standard mini-coax connection for the antenna.

Thanks!

My roommate has high speed sympatico connection for his 5-yr. old Sony Vaio desktop. I'm 2 floors above him looking to connect to the internet wirelessly. What should I buy? I've been told to buy a 'wireless router' that would connect to his computer. He does have a 'wireless network setup wizard' on his computer so I assume his comp. isn't too old for this kind of piggybacking arrangement. Any general suggestions, or recommendations as to what I kind of routers are good?
