yes that's exactly how you do it! Attach the cord to each computer. Assuming you are using windows, click the start button in the corner, then click on my network places, finally click "set up a small or home office network" it is on the left side. Windows' Network Setup window will walk you through the rest.

Sure its possible. Look for something called a USB to USB Network Cable. The great thing is that you don't need a network card. Just the cable and the software that it comes bundled with. It shouldn't cost more than $20. Just plug in the following DNS and IP addresses (see below). If you dad's computer already has these settings, then just create an address for your own laptop.
Computer 1
10.10.10.1
255.255.255.0
Computer 2
10.10.10.2
255.255.255.0

You can get a thumb drive- about 8GB for 20$ USD, and just transfer the files on the old computer onto it, and then plug it into the laptop, and put the files on it, and repeat. Depending on how much stuff you need to transfer, this could get repetitive, but with about 8GB a pass, it shouldn't take too long :).

If you have a router you can set up a network easily. If not you need a cross-over cable to connect them directly. You then need to use the network wizard on each machine to set them into the same workgroup, then set up shared folders to copy to and from.

to connect 2 computers directly:
- you need an ethernet crossover cable.
- each computer must have its own static IP address
- each computer must have a shared folder setup in advance
its easier to buy a router and let it handle the IP addresses.
or burn the data to a cd and just copy it to the new pc from the cd.

depending on the size of the files
The best and easiest way to do it is write all the files to a :-
cd disk, (up to 700 Meg)
usb jump drive (up to the size of the drive)
usb hard drive (up to the size of the drive)
or cable connect, (hard wire) use windows wizard to network them) and read the help files

I know it is probably possible, but I have never tried it. I use a flash drive to download, and transfer files, it is the easiest way that I know of, especially if you need to transfer alot of stuff.

External hard drives are always handy. I have an 80 gig for my laptop that I can carry around with me if I want to. Just plug it into the USB and copy everything over to the hard drive.

Yes it is! Just use crossover cables to connect the two NICs directly.

You could also use straight ones and connect via a switch or hub.
