A hub connects your local area network together between your various pc connected by cat5 cables. A router is one which acts as a gateway between your network and the web. A router acts like a DHCP which allocates an IP for your various pc or wireless laptops connected to it. A router helps connect your pcs in a network, so is actually more useful than a simple hub.
