Is it possible to shift gears without pushing in the clutch and without grinding or anything? Do you have to time it right or something? I heard this is what most truck drivers do because they have like 20 gears before they reach 40 mph. Is this true?

I know this is probably a dumb question but how do you know? It was slightly wet on the ground the other day and I was cruising around in second gear and then gunned it from about 3k rpm. The engine revved very very quickly to about 5500 but the car didn't go anywhere. I was thinking did my tires not hook up or something? But I didn't hear any tires squelling and usually I think they'd hook up even being a little bit wet. Do you think my clutch is slipping? Can I test somehow to find out?

I want to test drive a Smart Car, but it was pointed out to me that you only ought to go for test drives if you are serious about car shopping. I have been with friends who have tested out cars knowing they were buying them from their relative's dealership. so I am taking a poll... ok or not?
