Which vehicle would be cheapest to run in terms of MPG, a Vauxhall (Opel) Zafira 1.6l Petrol, or a Ford Transit 2l or 2.5l mini bus? Does anyone know the average MPG or litres per 100km for these vehicles?

Yes diesels have a good mpg BUT Transits are crap. I was working in a Transit which returned about 12-13 pence per mile while my 1.9 VW Transporter was giving me 8 pence per mile.

Make your choicel; - me, I wouldn't touch a ford again.

I am amazed at the mpg on recent Renault diesels - 1.5 litre
Modus gets 60mpg easily. But the high technology can be expensive when it goes wrong.
