They should be available from auto parts stores. It is a better idea to have a use for it before you buy it. That way you know how much current you need or wattage.
So the first step is to determine what you want it for. Shaving in the morning on the way to work? Running a power saw, running a TV at campsites?
Find the use and then find the right size. They are not that hard to install, or you could have it installed either way.
Good luck.

Northern equipment I think. Use it to recharge my wife's scooter and run a small electric blanket. My work truck has two, a small one I use to recharge my digital camera and computer up front, and a big one for my test bench, computer and drill, saws and dremel in the back. Trick is, be sure it is more than large enough to run what you will plug into it. Look on your equipment for the amperage needed. Also, some of the small cheap inverters actually provide a square wave rather than a sign wave which can really foul things up.
Also, make sure your vehicles alternator will actually provide that much power, remembering that it takes power to run the vehicle.

look at what you'll be trying to run with it. make sure the inverter will run what you need. for example lets say your TV DVD player needs 600 watts to run don't get a 400 watt inverter. i like to go with over kill and buy the biggest you can afford. mount it in a discreet location and run wires to a smartly placed wall outlet in your vehicle. it looks professional and everybody loves it when you go camping and you can plug in your blender for mixed drinks.
you can find them at any walmart, meijer, target, or eBay or what ever. just go big....if you can afford it. some of them say they can do like 2000 watt max but the constant draw rating is much less say 600 watt. you really want to look at what the constant rating is. go with a big name example: Colman, craftsman, black and Decker and you should do fine. oh and if you mount it permanent put in a place that's dry, cool, good airflow, and where it wont get kicked.

yeah , you can use them they are called power inverters.
you can use them for cell phone chargers if you dont have the one that plugs into the cigarette lighter outlet.
or a laptop , pda, mp3 player, dvd player, anything that you want to take in the vehicle but beware you can blow fuse's on the inverter and in the vehicle.

bypass to Radio Shack or yet another electronics shop and ask them to get you a 12 volt ability converter on your vehicle. then you definately in basic terms plug this element into your 12 volt outlet and plug your electronics into the opening that's on the different end and looks like the merchants at domicile.
