I took my car to the dealer because the battery light went on, so it turns out I need an alternator. The guy said it would all cost 495. I know Im a girl and all, but it shouldnt cost that much.

How much should it really cost and what should I say when I go to get my car? I haven't paid for it yet.

Thanks

Just picked up an 88 Skidoo Stratus. Skis turn and handle bars turn, but the sled stays straight. Asked at a dealer and he said it was the wear rod. It doesnt look like there was any originally. Someone else said the Skegs? I dont know what or even where that would be. I thought this was suppose to be fun, not so much it keeps getting stuck.

This happened awhile ago and ripped up my serpentine belt and tension pulley, both of which I have replaced but I'm afraid to drive it because I don't want this to happen again and its still not turning. I know that if I keep driving it the friction will destroy it again, until I fix it.

My mom has an 89 oldsmobile (not sure what make) that has 4 wheel disc brakes. She had an incident yesterday that has her worried. She was coming to a stop sign when she pressed the brake pedal it made a "woosh" sound & went to the floor. She was able to stop but she had to put all of her weight on the pedal. Does anyone know what could have caused this? I hate going to a garage unprepared.

Thanks

Last night we took our 93 Isuzu Rodeo to the gas station and got gas. When we tried to start it, it just clicked and it wouldn't turn over. So someone cleaned off the cables and connectors and all that stuff, jumped us, and we headed home. The car seemed sluggish and all the gauges were jumping and the radio wouldn't work. There has been a belt squeaking for a week now (figured it was the serpentine). When we got home he turned the car off and then tried to start it again and it would just click. Do you think its the belt, bad battery, or could it be something worse like the alternator?

What are the effects of offsets on cars? The differences between positive, zero, and negative offsets (I can't understand what wikipedia is saying)? And the good and bad sides?

I have a car and I wanted to modify it, little by little. I wished not to change my tires and mags but they seems to look my car with narrow wheels, the length/gap of a wheel to the other wheel at the other side (because they are "inserted" against the body/wheel well of my car). What I want is to look it wider (what do you call it, negative or positive offset?). Now I wished to adjust my offsets but how will the adjustments affect my car's handling, acceleration, fuel consumption, etc.?

Thank you for answering my questions and happy new year to all of you. =)

My car won't start. Here's what happened.

I was driving, and I could feel the car turn it off, so I headed to the right hand lane, in hopes of finding a place to pull over. I put it in park, tried to start it, but nothing happened. Finally I got it to run, but as I approached the next stoplight the car didn't seem right, and started idling erratically. It shut off on me again at the stoplight, but I quickly got it going again and headed to the gas station, thinking that this problem was a lack of fuel. The car continued to act like it was starving of fuel (engine was lurching) so I made sure to put at least 3 gallons in the car. I then proceeded to try starting it up again, but no, no luck. I spent 15 minutes trying to start that thing, but it didn't work. Someone eventually had to jump start my car (since the battery was dying) so that I could keep trying to start it, but after doing that for a while my starter just got slower and slower until it barely moved.

the engine was stored without a filter and not only did water enter the oil passage to the pump, but also damaged the threads on the oil filter spin-on fitting.

Thanks for the help.

Why will people their doctor everything and their mechanic nothing? As a Master Auto Tech, I have people bring me in running problems or other maladies all the time. They give as little information as possible They foolishly think the less they say the less it costs. It usually works the other way around. How many times has the customer said, "It, was just fine than all of a sudden..." , Only to find out after wasting much time (Translate their money) they tried to do something and screwed it all up. Something that couldn't possibly have screwed up with out a human idiot messing with it! For any one who thinks auto techs are idiots, look in the mirror and you will see who the real idiots are. Autos are very complex machines and anyone who is not a professional in the craft has no idea how challanging it is. I've been at it for over 30 years and I havent seen it all yet. But dont lie or hold information from your mechanic and expect to be helping your self.

I wrecked my car and its been standing at this place for about two months now the fees are ridiculous, and the man won't release it unless I pay him for the car, its a 1999 vw jetta with 80k miles on it with a broken radiator and about 3000 $ worth of damage to the front right end. Im only 19 and Im broke so I can't afford to pay a 1,000 just to get it out then fees and everything would kill me. My question is what is going to happen if I just never pick it up?

I have a 92 plymouth grand voyager with approx. 180k miles on original engine. Not running great, but still had alot of power. For about the last month, I have not been filling the tank - usually only about half full. I also have not filled it as early as I should (below E). Yesterday, I drove about 5 miles and it was running ok. I stopped for gas & decided to fill it up completely. When I started the car after, it would idle only for a few seconds & then die. I limped home, with it stalling whenever the RPM's dropped below 1500. To start it I had to gun the engine. On hills, it had very little power. At first I thought that the car had finally died and I would need to replace it right away. Then I started thinking that, because it was running ok before I got gas, maybe that was what was wrong. If it is, is there something inexpensive I can do to correct it? I am single mom with 2 boys & am wiped out after Christmas & rent. I appreciate any help you can you can give.

She has about 105k miles right now, and I drive about 10k per year. It has never given me any problems, and I maintain it fairly well. Are there any major repairs I will likely encounter in the next few years?

On a side note: I keep getting pressure to sell it from my family because "it's going to breakdown soon", but I'm perfectly happy with my car... Frankly, I love my car, and not having a car note (unlike the rest of my family) makes it all that much better.
