I took my car to the dealer because the battery light went on, so it turns out I need an alternator. The guy said it would all cost 495. I know Im a girl and all, but it shouldnt cost that much.

How much should it really cost and what should I say when I go to get my car? I haven't paid for it yet.

Thanks

The dealer always cost a lot more. You should take it to an auto repair shop you trust. SOme if them wont do a good job. (it cost a lot cheaper and it depends on which alternator you get)...but try to get a good one.

Anyways you cant do anything about it now ..since they have already start doing it. Then you have to pay $495. Dealers always charge a lot more. But if you want the genuine alternator (the ones from the dealer) you can go to nearest auto repair shop and ask them to order it and change the alternator for you. The genuine one might be expensive.

labor is a key factor in the price but here is the price for an aftermarket remanufactured unit, honda dealer will be a little more expensive than that so they probably arent joshing you.

if you authorized them to do the work you have to pay their price. ALWAYS get a price BEFORE you have work done.

You should have asked the question before you got it fixed. A rebuilt alternator from Autozone or Advance Auto is usually around $100. Retail about $150 plus 2 to 3 hour install if its hard to get to.
I just did a 2003 Ford F350 alternator it cost $225 from Ford for a rebuilt. It took 30 min. to install.
I would need more info on your car.

an alternator is somewhat expensive. I do think that he is overcharging you. it should cost around 250-300 for a new one. you might be able to go to a used part store and find one for around 50 bucks though. have your dealer put it in for you though. they are a pain in the a** to instal. good luck.

Unfortunately, you're stuck. Had you given them authorization to do the work? Sounds to me like you ok'd the deal and now have second thoughts about the amount you agreed to. Yes, it's high, and you could get the alternator new or rebuilt for anywhere from $50-$150, and then the labor of putting it on. If a shop took 3 hours at $60 an hour thats $180 to say $150 for a new alternator is $330...

I think it should cost at least $450- $445. I would tell the person that you looked it up on the computer and it didnt cost that much that it cost only so and so. That is whayt I would tell the person who is checking you out...

What if you found out that 80% of the dealers across the country that perform the same exact service on your car charge about the same amount of money? Would you be satisfied then? You can't compare a dealer's repair cost in this case to an independent or chain shop because the dealer is probably installing a brand new manufacturer's alternator and not a remanufactured alternator. The cost computation is simple. You simply go to their parts department and get the cost of the new alternator part itself. Then you look up how many labor hours that job takes in the labor manuals. Multiply that by $75 an hour for labor and add it to the parts cost for the grand total.

wow that is pricey i would say an alternator should run about 125 so probably 200 for everything. Tell them you did some research on want to know why it is so much because an alternator should not cost that much. If they try to screw you tell them you are going to report them to the bbb
