My daughter has a 1987 or so VW GOlf. The steering wheel column smokes ever so often. We clean in out and it still happens. I have never seen or heard of this before, though the dealer says it is common if things get dirty in there. Gimme some advice here, peeps!

I had problem with my cooling system. After I traced out, I found out that my cooling fan is not working properly. At first, I thought it didn't work at all. But after testing the relay, it is in fact, working. So I went to the Temp Sensor, thinking it has to be the problem. But the Auto Shop was unable to even locate the sensor, they really sucks. However, now I just notice it wasn't even the sensor's fault. The cooling fan will only turn on when the AC is on. And it will turn off as well. That indicates that the sensor gotta be working; if not the fan should either stay on or off the whole time/ it shouldn't cycle if it is not working. I am not really a electrical guy. Can any of you guys tell me where the problem is? I am suspecting the electrical wirings between the cooling system and the ac system are the
ultimate blame. Am I right?
Any advise will be appreciated! Thank You!

My mechanic has held our van for 4mo.+. We had the van towed to his shop feb. 2nd for diagnosis and estimate. I have maintained communication with the owner/mechanic directly. After checking in regularly for 2 and 1/2 months I explained to the mechanic how important this vehicle is to us and the sooner we could get it repaired the better. First week of june I stopped in to check on the diagnosis, "needs a valve job" ($1800). "Whats your turn around time on a valve job?" He assured me, "could have that ready on monday". My van has had little work if any done to it since that conversation (three weeks ago). We need this vehicle, we are happy to pay and have given deposits to help expedite the project. We are paying for a home out of state and need the van to move. Also, we have jobs that we've had to postpone starting.

Is fuel efficiency directly proportional to the temperature setting? In other words, when you turn on the AC, does it burn more fuel the lower you se the temperature because it's working harder? Thanks!

The car will have the dome light on, the radio on, and everything seems normal when I have the key turned to ACC, but when I turn the key to ON.. everything shuts off, and it won't turn over to start. When I take the key out of the ignition, the car will make a ticking noise for about 30 seconds in the hood... seems to be located around the fuse box. At the same time of the ticking noise, my dome light will dim and flicker for about 30 seconds also. Does anyone have any idea what my problem might be?

I have one headlight on my car that keeps going out everytime I replace it. It rained two days ago, right after I changed it. My head light keeps filling with water, I think and its ruining the new light. How can I go about fixing it?

I just went to my friendly local quicky oil change shop for a oil change today. I was told I can't get a oil change because apparently the oil drain pan was rusted out and the sludge from old oil help keep it seal. I was also told that the replacement for the oil drain pan would cost about $1,000. I love my old crappy car but I don't love it enough to save it with $1,000.

So the only reasonable course to take was to drive it to the ground.

I have few questions though.
1. Is it safe to not change oil(will the car blow up?)
2. How long would my car last without changing oil ( I last changed about 9 months/3,000 miles ago)?
3. are there any alternates to not changing oil/repair?

Thanks for any helps!

p.s. for those curious I drove 95 Ford Aerostar.

I took it there and I got it diagnosed by 2 different places and both of them said they don't know what it could be and I'll need a tune up to find the problem ($500), the cars a MITSUBISHI ECLIPSE 1996 Manuel Base Model (NA and Not Turbo Charged). I'm getting like less than 5 miles per gallon now, and the fuel drops rapidly on full throttle and for some odd reason, the fuel seems to rise a little when I stay on low RPMs. Could it possible be the gauge itself is messed up or which part of the fuel system could this be, I wouldn't be surprised from a leak because I get smells of gas here and there, but My guess is that the fuel injectors have a problem.Adding it runs kind of hard in idle and it accelerates a bit slower than it used to on high RPMs. Where could a hard to find leak be? Any suggestions Please!!!

I had the entire exhaust system replaced by a mechanic in CO which I have gone to multiple times and always been extremely satisfied with their work. Because of this, I trusted them. They knew that I was leaving on a 4,000 mile road trip the next morning so everything had to be perfect. Before I even left my house the next day I noticed that the exhaust was hanging unusually low, but I did not have time to call in to the mechanic to ask about it, and since I trusted their work I assumed it would be ok. Not long after driving it began scraping the ground every time i drove over even the slightest bump or uphill. It was about 2 inches off the ground but I did not have the money nor time to stop to have it looked at before I reached CA. I went to a shop in CA and they noted numerous problems with the way the exhaust was installed - it was just plain wrong, missing screws, bent backwards, etc. The way it was installed destroyed my coverter. had to spend another $2000 to get it fixed
