My daughter has a 1987 or so VW GOlf. The steering wheel column smokes ever so often. We clean in out and it still happens. I have never seen or heard of this before, though the dealer says it is common if things get dirty in there. Gimme some advice here, peeps!

Have you tried putting a nicotine patch on it??

OK.. seriously.. smoke from the steering colum is not normal. It indicates excessive resistance in the electrical system. Excessive resistance can be caused by either dirty electrical connections, or by a short. Either way, it could end up being expensive and potentially dangerous. Have it looked at by an automotive professional before the resistance causes the insulation on the wires to catch on fire.

I have never heard of that before on anything other than a ford. What, and how, are you cleaning it out? Nothing and I mean Nothing in a car should smoke. Except the people inside. Do not pour fluids down the steering column.

I've never heard of this 'common' problem, and I'm all over the VW scene. Get a multimeter, and check for a bad ground.
That's really unsafe for your daughter. At least get her a little fire extinguisher to carry with her. Check out the forum below for good information on your golf.

You have either an ignition switch or a turn signal switch causing that. Poor contact and the grease in the switch will make a puff of smoke. On Grand Prixs and Buick Regals this was a common occurence. On those vehicles we would replace the T/S switches.

The only thing I can think of would be dust getting into the wiring harness connectors. If it is just a puff of dust coming out, I wouldn't worry. But if it smells like an electrical fire I would seriously consider taking it up with the dealer.

I don't remember smoking steering columns ever being normal. Could you have a wire that is shorting out in the column?
