It sounds like your pressure plate is not disengaging the clutch fully when you depress the clutch pedal. What this means, is your input shaft is still spinning as you attempt to select 1st gear. It would be wise for you to have it diagnosed by a transmission technician either at the dealer, or a transmission shop. To verify the pressure plate spring being faulty will be very quick, since all that is needed is to remove the clutch fork access cover to see how it operates. Hope this helps.

The first gear may be worn to the point that some of the teeth are worn or have burrs on it. you may have to tear it down and inspect the first gear and other gears while it is apart.
The first gear sets behind the second gear and in front of the reverve & first gear sleeve.
I assume that this is a 3.03 fully synchronized 3- speed trans. If you don't know anything about transmissions take it to a high performance shop that does transmissions, they can do a better job than a regular transmission shop.

You're not supposed to put it in first except at a stop. But, you should be abble to get away with it if you have the clutch 100% in and you shift slowly, not like if you were racing.

it sounds like the clutch needs adjusting on it,id try that first, they will grind like that because the car is setting still ,and some time grind a little in second gear if your not moving real fast.when you change, but id try adjusting it first, that might help it,good luck with it hope this helps.

maybe your hydraulic clutch system needs to be bled... does it fully disengage when you are at a stop with the clutch pedal pushed in, or does it creep forward a little? if it creeps then your slave cylinder is probably bad, if not then your synchro is probably shot and the tranny needs a rebuild. it could also be the clutch release bearing or throwout bearing.
