Maintenance & Repairs - February 2007

I went to the dealership this weekend to change the oil in my car and rotate the tires.

Because I have been at that dealership for service before, they pulled up my history by LAST NAME instead of by my car's VIN.

Shortly after getting home, I realized that they recorded the service under my previous car's VIN because this was the first time I took the new car there and they had no way of knowing I changed vehicles.

My previous car was stolen a couple of months back -- and now, because of this error, it looks as though I took my last car to be serviced instead of the new one.

I don't like this.

Can I have the records fixed (after the fact)? Not only does this make it look suspicious (that dealership reports to carfax) but I also missed out on recording the service visit on my new car's record!

If anyone who works at Ford is reading this: PLEASE PULL UP CUSTOMERS' INFORMATION BY THEIR VIN!!!

I have a '99 Honda Civic Ex that just stopped working. I was driving and all of a sudden, I started to lose power. I tried to accelerate, but it kept slowing down. I had oil/ gas in the car and the temp on the car was normal. I tried to start it again but it the engine will not turn over. All my lights work as well as my radio. I also didn't notice any smoke coming from the car. What could the possibilities be?

My elderly mom drives very little. She has a 2003 Toyota Camry with 17000 miles on it.

Because 3000 miles have not been driven since the last oil change, it has not been changed yet.. but it's been over 9 months since the last one.

I know it's supposed to be every 3000 miles OR every 3 months. The car hasn't turned on any warning lights or anything. I plan to take it to the dealership to change the oil next week, but is it possible that there is already some damage to something?

An answer from any mechanic would be appreciated.

I aquired the 63 comet and there is no brake assemble at all to go by. I have checked auto manuals and the info is not detailed enough. Funds are limited and I do not want to take it to a mechanic. I need a parts break down and diagram to show me what I need and how to install it. Is there anyone out there that can help?

Its about 4-5 degrees out so I know its really cold. Its been around 10-12 in the mornings and my car has been slow turning over. This morning it turned over about 3 times and then started clicking and refused to start. Will it start after it warms up a little bit? The lights inside the car are no affected, they are still bright but do dim when I attempt to start the car. I'm just wondering if cars usually do this and then warm up on their own later or will I need to have someone come and look at it?
Thanks!

I just bought a used car and am wondering what I can do to warm it up. MI is cold in the winter (right now it's 6 degrees). We replaced the thermostat yesterday, but it didn't change very much. My dad said there may be a leak in the radiator because there was some steam-very little-coming out. Is there anything I can do to make it work properly? Eventually it did get warmer and the gauge went up, but how long should it take? Can this be repaired without going broke?

Well when I was 16 I bought a 1995 talon great car never had any problems ..... untill I totalled it ....... racing somebodys mom it's actually a funny story but any way even after totalling it that car still lasted me a while and besides it needing new tires once a month was still a great car. I then at 17 bought a 1994 dodge stealth non turbo version and from about day 2 always had a problem with it I mean every time I drove it something else broke for some reason I was replacing struts every other week doing engine work or something and it only had 80 or 90k eventually I gave up and sold it. Shortly after I bought a twin turbo 3000gt and constantly had problems up until the day I some how threw a rod driving 60 in 5th gear I then sold it and stuck with my truck that I never had a problem with. I want to buy a 1993 through 1998 supra TT but don't want to always be working on it did I just have bad luck before? Any one know how reliable a supra is I've seen some with over 200k on them

if the thermistate is half way is that normal? what if its a 1/4 way down from the red? does that mean its starting to over heat? my brother always told me if your car is over heating to turn the heater on full blast it worked in his truck. but does that rule apply to all cars? what should you do? and if your car has that problem could that be a radiator problem or could it be a number of possibillity's

2002 Ford Explorer transmission just started slipping. "OD" light comes on. Is there an additive or anything to temporarily stop this? In the old days people used to use sawdust. I just need to make it last until I trade it in this week. Somebody has to know a trick.

I have a 1993 Pontiac Grand Am GT V6 and it has a hole in the muffler, but it sounds good. However, it does need to be replaced because of the hole. I would really like to find out what kind of muffler would be best for my car to make it sound good, but I don't want it to be really loud, just enough to be noticed on the road and by other people. Would a Cherry Bomb turbo muffler be too loud, or do i need to go with a Flowmaster, or something else? I also want it to be as inexpensive as possible.

I have a 1992 Lincoln Town Car (very good mechanical condition a few weeks ago), and I just had my oil and everything changed, as well as a fluids check. Not a real tune up, but since I changed gas, I've been noticing a jerking, sometimes violate shaking in my car. When I first crank up the car it's fine no problems, no odd movements, however when I start to drive it (mainly when I accelerate) I feel a jerking sensation from the motor. Even when I'm decelerating I experience a similar jerking sensation. It's been doing this for 3 days now, and the freaking mechanics are always busy. Anybody know what's going on? The guy who owned the car before me used regular gasoline, then I switched to Plus, I don't know if this is the problem or not but it started around the switch. No problems prior to it!
