First, There is usually a solenoid that engages the Starter. You will have to connect a wire to bypass the starter switch and engage the starter motor. (This is only a momentary thing until the engine starts up.)

Second, the coil that connects to the distributor has to have power connected in order to power the spark plugs.

That is just basic bypass with old cars and ignitions systems. Today with modern ignition systems, it is probably a whole different ball of wax.

hook up a coated wire from that connects to the positive side of your starter so you can start it with the key in the number 2 position and just touch the cable to the positive side of the battery.

Short across the starter solenoid temporally, Just use insulated jumper so you will not get shocked.
