Try using a better grade of oil then add an oil supplement to it, I had the same problem, sorry I cant remember the name of it but I know that there are lots of good stuff on the market, my van burned so much oil that you could not see anything behind you,Slick 50 is one of them try checking with your auto centres for more info.

Actually valve stem seals are not hard to do and no with the right tools you do not have to remove the head.I guess you really could if you wanted to work that hard.Theres 2 main tools you need.1- is an on car valve spring removal tool and 2- a cylinder leakage tester and a air compressor. All you have to do is screw the cyl leakage tester into the spark plug housing of the cyl in which you are replacing the seals and plug the leakage into an air compressor and inflate the cyl.Now the cyl will have to be at Top dead center where both the valves are closed. You can find TDC by removing the valve cover which you will have to do anyways and then rotating the crankshaft by hand until both valves are up(closed). This will allow you to pressurize the cylinder with the leakage tester and air compressor.Next step is to remove the rocker arms on the intended cyl. Then take the valve spring to and clip it to the valve spring. They normally have a lever in which you push down compressing the spring. With the spring compressed you can remove the keepers. Then when the keepers are out release the tension from the tool.Remove the retainer and valve spring .You will then find the valve seal underneath the spring it just slides onto the valve stem. With the cyl. pressurized the valve will not fall down into the head and you can replace both the intake and exhaust valve seal. hope this helps

The 4.3 in those years do have a smoking problem. I have replaced the seals with what is known as an "umbrella seal" and have had much better luck than oem seals. The next best thing to try is putting a can of "restore" in your oil at your next oil change. I have had engines stop burning oil with this product. Most parts stores have it.

i own a repair shop, and i also own a 4.3 engine in a s-10 they usually don't give any problems with using oil like that ,you might need to change the PVC valve also, this will cause a little smoke to come from it,another thing you might do also is try using a thicker oil in it,this may help some, these engines usually don't use oil at all unless they really have a lot of miles on them, right now that's the only thing i know to tell you to do to it,other than a over haul, try the PVC,valve first and the thicker oil it may help it,good luck,i hope this help,s.

If the smoke is bluish and smells of burning oil, than it's either vavlve guides/seals or piston rings. If it smokes on startup only, then it's valve related. If it smokes on acceleration, than it's piston rings. -Good Luck!

Remove the exhaust manifold and make sure that all the pipes are open. This happened on a 305 Chevy V8, and one pipe was totally plugged with carbon.
