Battery wouldn't hold a charge. It was a couple of years old, so I replaced it. Several days later, new battery failed. So I had the alternator rebuilt and the battery charged. Still not charging. And now, the car won't turn off after I disengage the ignition, and I have to unplug the alternator (car continues to run after pulling battery cables). Please help.

I have a 1998 Grand Caravan, 3.8 liter, 80,000 miles. A month ago my car started hesitating and sputtering. The sputtering got so bad that the car wouldn’t even accelerate when I gave it gas, acting like it was flooded with fuel. It even backfired a little and produced a heavy fuel smell inside and outside the car. The “Service Engine Soon” light came on and I took it to the mechanic so they could read the trouble code. The “engine code reader” said that there was a problem with the fuel injector in the fifth cylinder and that the fuel injector was misfiring. The mechanics first replaced the spark plugs and spark plug cables. A few days later tho, the “Service Engine” light came on again with the same trouble code. They replaced the fuel injector in the 5th cylinder and again we got the same trouble code: bad fuel injector in the 5th cylinder. They then replaced the ignition coil, but this did not solve the problem either. The mechanics are baffled. Can you help?

It's blowing smoke like mad whenever the engine is idling - at traffic lights etc. It sailed through it's MOT just over a month ago with no mention of any problems.
It usually smokes a little when the oil needs toping up but i have checked that and it's fine. Any suggestions?

When the negative terminal is connected to the battery the starter starts cranking by itself, even after ignition. Ford said my solenoid is wired backwards but I tried every possible combination but still doing it. HELP! lol

We recently had a terrible wind storm and shut off power everywhere. I ran out of gas and someone loaned me gasoline, I poured it into my tank, come to find out it was mixed with oil. I have since filled my tank with premium gas and a product to boost the engine. What else can I do or is this normal?

I bought this van from my mom who had no problems with it. 2 weeks after it became ours, the display panel went out (the speedometer, tachometer, gas, engine temp gages all read zero). Still ran, just didn't know anything.
In June of this year, when you would start it, the engine would start, but killed right away. It would do this a few times and then you would get nothing. Eventually (usually 2-8 hours) it will start and keep running. This is a random deal, not nearly a daily occurance, but happens often enough to be considered undependable. The mechanic is not sure what is wrong with it.
Anyone?

It's not so hard to do.

Here's an example of a bad question;
"Why won't my car start?"

Here's an example of a better question;
"Why won't my 2001 Honda Civic start?"
Gives us, Make, Model and Year. That narrows down the options by about 10,000 posibilities.

Here's an example of an even better question;
"My 2001 Honda Civic turns over, but won't start"
See, now we have narrowed it to maybe 10 things to check.

The more information you supply, the more specific an answer you will receive.

Assuming that the battery, starter, and alternator are all fine, what other causes ( if any) would cause a car to not want to start on the first couple of tries?

It happens once every month or so and continues for about 30 minutes. It wreaks havock with my door locks and alarm when I am driving because the car thinks the door is opening and closing.
.
The way it comes and goes, it seems like a failing relay or other component rather than a door switch. Most of the time, all door switches work normally and I can't make this happen, or stop happening by playing with them.

Any suggestions??

Last night i turned of my Jeep and i heard a humming coming from the fuel tank. It seems the fuel pump is not shutting off when i shut the ignition off. I disconected the battery to keep from running it down. I looked in the chiltons manual and i couldn't find any information about a relay switch or fuse for the fuel pump. The fuel pump works but seems like a switch is stuck open. It is a carburated straight 6 1989. Jeep Cheroke Pioneer.
