Insurance & Registration - March 2007

[Selected]: All categories Cars & Transportation Insurance & Registration

my family has two cars. (maxima and accent)
I (21years old) use the accent and my parents use the maxima.
All three of us are under the same insurance plan.

I might sell the accent and buy a used car and pay monthly(financing).
so that means the insurance has to be full coverage right? and not liability. (the maxima and the accent are both fully paid and they are under liability right now)

So if I buy a used car what is the best way to minimize the insurance cost?...any good insurance companies? can I be covered under my dad's name or something? my friend said something like that..but I don't know if there is such a thing.
by the way my parents live in massachusetts and i live in NJ.
what should i do?

Does anyone know the laws for underage drivers for car insurance? I would be driving one of their cars and i wouldnt have one of my own. If you can site a source, it'd be great cause then i could show it to them. thanks.

Back ground:
I moved from California to Hawaii with my car last year. At the same time, I reported my change of address to DMV California so they should know my new address in Hawaii.
I'm still keeping my California driver laicense because State of Hawaii allows me to keep and continue to use my Californa driver license in Hawaii until it expires. I plan getting the Hawaii driver license before my California driver license expires.
About my car, I registered my vehivle in Hawaii as soon as my car arrived to Hawaii.
I paid-off my car loan before shipping my car from california to Hawaii, and re-titled my car in Hawaii. So, I now have both of the title and registration, issued by County of Hawaii, under my name.

Problem:
However, I received the Vehicle Registration Renewal notice from DMV California yesterday by mail.
I thought Hawaii-DMV sent my updated information to California-DMV. Or, they don't communicate each other?

Anyway, what should I do?

I need sr-22 insurance. I don't have a car anymore because the county lost it when they impounded it. I do have a motorcycle and need to start riding it. The problem is I went to get insurance on my motorcycle and they said I had to get my license first. I can't get my license until I get sr-22 insurance. What should I do?

This was during heavy snow. My car slid sideways 90 degrees and came to a stop. Driver behind me didn't stop and totalled my car. He was in a big pickup and has no insurance. I was in a tiny two-seater and have uninsured motorist coverage. I got a police report which shows we were both in the same lane the whole time, and his "following too close" and a citiation for no insurance are there. In my taped deposition I mistakedly commented that I ended up in the right hand lane when I exited my car after the wreck. My insurance company is using my comment to assign me 60% liability because "I slid INTO HIS lane and he hit me". This is not what I remember and not what the police report drawing depicts. The accident report does mention that I "lost control due to speed" but still I think it's irrelevant. I came to a slow, sliding stop and was rear ended and TOTALLED indicating not only following too close but excessive speed by the other guy. Other guy never gave a deposition. Refused.

The accident was minor, I lightly backed into the back bumper of a "NJ access" vehicle (possibly a state vehicle). We exchanged insurance information and the police came and filed a report, it says "minor damages" to the vehicles. I saw her bumper, it was barely any damage if any. I thought the situation was over until I heard from a "third party" agency that is contracted to handle claims for the vehicle owner. They are attempting to get $700. They sent me an estimate in writing and it sounds crazy. There is no way there is that much damage. I told her this and I "bargained" her down to $600, which is fishy! What can I do here? I ABSOLUTELY cannot get insurance invovled because of prior accident history and other factors. If I don't pay I'm afraid I will get sued. Do they legally have to get a few estimates, perhaps one at a body shop of my choice? What course of action do I have here? Can I make them get another estimate?

I feel like its not worth it to them to get an attorney invovled for such a small accident. HELP!
