I've always told my kids that just because the state says they can drive at 16 doesn't mean I do. My eldest did at 16 but I felt she was mature enough. The middle one not until she turned 17 1/2; youngest got her license 1 month after 16th bday but can't drive because she has no job and we won't foot the insurance bill. Lots factors into it.

Well you should find out WHY they say that.

If your school grades are reflected in your spelling that may be a factor, but also remember that one you start driving, THEIR insurance rates are going to take a major leap upward. That may also be a valid reason depending upon your economic status.

Sounds like its time for a mature discussion with them. Sit down, ask why and be prepared to respond with valid objections (things like 'everyone else drives' is so immature as to not even be worth discussing). If you can show maturity and understanding in that sort of setting then maybe you can convince them that you will also show it in your driving skills and operation.

Its worth a shot..

Keep in mind, that if you decide to do an end run around them and drive a car anyway, you are putting THEM at risk in the event of an accident. Even one minor accident that is your fault can end up costing them some MAJOR cash.
(Back to the maturity thing again).

ok.. go try.

Wow really? My parents wanted me to get my license as soon as I turned 16! and I did, because I've been driving since i was 10.. hahahha!

Your parents are probably just trying to protect you, and to ensure you won't be spending money on gas..etc. It's a good thing in a way but... why would they make you wait so long, and who are they to say when you should get it? You can get it without your parents... but its your decision. I couldnt live without my license, I'm a driver

at the same time as i became 17 i could have stated HELL NO that isn't a superior ingredient. I hadto wait at the same time as i became 17 to get mine. I had to have my let for over a three hundred and sixty 5 days..... besides the indisputable fact that that's a superior chance to get your utilising skills down and your mothers and fathers smooth about their little lady out interior the mad international of highway rage... you have to be at a mature factor and comprehend the intensity that utilising may be... be affected individual and also you'd be between the few who're no longer reckless.

That stinks, what did you do to cause them not to trust you? I understand not buying you a car or something, but a license would not only be helpfull to you but to them as well.

You need their concent anytime before 18, but after you are 18 you can do whatever you want. I think you could get into more trouble relying on other peolple your parents don't know or taking public transportation.

I'd confront them on the reasons why and offer you side as well.

It is for them. I couldn't wait to get my license, why do they want you to wait?
