Honestly.. it varies from state to state on document requirements, testing, age requirements and such..
For instance in Indiana.. if you obtain a drivers ed permit.. you must pass drivers ed be 16 years and 60 days old and be able to pass the written exam.. if you have the driving waiver for good practices in class you are not required to take the driving test with the BMV examiner... If you obtain a standard learners permit..you must pass the written exam first.. then hold the permit and practice for 60 days at least... then be at least 16 years and 180 days old to schedule a drive test with the BMV examiner... Documents required are generally a Birth Certificate, Identification card or other secondary document, Social Security Card and Proof of residency... I would suggest going to your local BMV or their website to find out the most accurate information you can. Laws do change from time to time.
