yeah..if you're caught driving the car gets impounded ...you go to jail...and between the fines court costs and impound fees you'll be in debt for a lon time... not to mention if you don't turn your tags in they'll hit you with a fee for each day you are without insurance...and you'll have to pay that before you can register any future cars

OK.. if we take it as a single event, then that is pretty much it. Its what you want to do afterwards that makes it significant.

If you drive your car and you get caught or (worse - WAAAY worse) you have an accident, then things get pretty dismal.

1) The car is generally towed on the spot since it can not legally be driven on the street. A nice cop will let you hire a tow truck and take it home (off the street) but a hard liner will have it sent to an impound yard. Figure costs of $100 plus $30 a day as a minimum.

2) Either way you will get a ticket. Now you face loosing YOUR license which means that even if you get the car updated YOU can't drive it or anything. (yeah... that sucks )doesn't it)

3) OK.. lets say that you have the misfortune to get in a minor fenderbender .. add a minium of about $3k to your headaches to repair the other car because without insurance YOU are liable. If the other driver reports it as required by law, then you will get a summons by mail to explain why you were driving without insurance (see item 2)

4) Someone got hurt you say? Bend over dude because you are just about to be royally screwed (by yourself - a neat trick) . Hospital stays average about $1 to $2,000 per DAY for basic care.. and then add on the treatment. Guess who is going to pay for it no matter HOW long it takes...(oh.. and that filing with the state is now MANDATORY - back to item #2 again)

5) It just keeps getting better and better department.... now that the bill are paid.. that poor victim has flashbacks, phantom pain (or maybe very real if you hit him hard enough) and even his wife is going to sue you for loss of 'companionship' - yep that happens.

Civil courts award damages without regards to your ability to pay.. those judgements last damn near forever .. look at OJ who is still obligated to pay and, in fact, just had all of his assets siezed from that book that didn't publish. You will not have a full paycheck for a looooooong time.

OK... so thats a really bad scenario.. but it is all to realistic.

and ISis what can happen if you lose the insurance and registration and drive.

Scary isn't it. Go get the insurance ...

Well, for starters, you can't drive the car.

What you need to do is get yourself re-insured, and the DMV should re-instate the registration once you can provide proof of insurance.

You will need to provide proof of insurance, and the registration will be restored.
