Hi all, I currently own a 1993 Volvo 940 with 137,000 miles and a 1998 Volvo V70XC with 134,000 miles. My grandfather is cancelling his drivers' license and wants to give us a loaded (even the digital dash) 1996 Mercury Grand Marquis LS Bayshore with only 65,000 miles and no major repairs ever. I absolutely love this car, but my wife isn't so sold.

We can also only afford to own two cars; it wouldn't be economically practical for us to own three with only two drivers. Their gas mileage is all about equal; so is the insurance cost. My question is: Should I take the Mercury? If so, which Volvo should I get rid of? The V70 has insanely high repair bills but, it is a wagon, so it's good for occasional trips. The 940 is my wife's favorite, and is essentially bulletproof -- no major repairs ever. The Mercury is one of my favorite cars of all time, plus it's soooo comfortable and repairs (if we ever need them) are generally cheap.

So...again...Which TWO should stay?

Took to mechanic. He said relay to power windows had melted wires (relay under dash). Melted wires go into wire harness. Has anyone had a similar problem? Any Volvo mechanics out there?

i need to know how to reset the lights or make them go away. I have the power steering light on then the stc service required and the emission required. All the lights turn on at the same time. Was wondering what is wrong. Dont want to take to dealer because they will make me bankrupt this time for sure. Serious answers only please.

I own a classic 1970 Volvo 144s. It is a four door with all original interior (with exception of stereo). Still own original stereo however. What is a car like that worth? Excellent cond. Kept in garage.

What are the maintenance cost in the U.S. on the 2004+ Volvo S40? I was looking at Audi and BMW but they have such high costs if parts get broken, and things do go wrong fairly easily on those brands I've heard. I've also heard that Volvos last forever, so let me know maintenance and repair costs and dependability.

The car runs great but the body is semi-crappy thanks to a delivery truck backing into me last year. My main confusion is whether it's being a stick makes it worth more ... or less. There seem to not be very many of them around. I'm only the second owner of the car and hate to part with it, but it's time to move on. Ideas?

I live in Dubai and I need new brake pads. For two front brake pads, they charge 700 dirhams which is around 180 or so American dollars. Mercedes charges 400 for all four pads. Volvo is charging like crazy. Anybody know where I can get cheap pads but are authentic because that is just highway robbery and they know they can get away with it. But I also heard that the BMW 5 series brake pads are almost exactly the same except for the little metal piece on the back of the Volvo pads.

I have a 1992 Volvo 940GL with 225K miles that has started randomly stalling out while driving at highway speeds. So far there is no correlation to gas level in the tank or weather, it does it on sunny days as well as rainy, and with full tank. Fuel pump, plugs, wires, distributor are all new and have had no effect. It immediately starts again when the key is turned off and then restarted. Sometimes it does this several times per day, sometimes it won't do this for several days or even weeks. This is very frustrating and every time I bring it to a garage it is running fine and they can find nothing wrong. Anyone have any ideas ??

I drive a 1990 Volvo 240 with 226,000 miles on it. The original alternator lasted 12 years//160,000 miles. The replacement, a rebuilt unit, lasted 5 years//65,000 miles (fair enough), and died a month ago. The rebuilt unit that replaced it just died yesterday, with only about 1000 miles on it. Is it likely a short circuit or other malfunction caused the latest one to crap out? What should my next step be: thoroughly troubleshooting the charging system for a short, as described in the Haynes manual? Or is it likely the latest alternator was just a faulty unit from day 1? Thanks!
