The lights on Volvo's are on because allot of countries around the world mandate to have the headlights on for visibility purposes.

Alot of people forget to turn their lights on when it rains, snows, or it just plain starts to get dark outside.

Volvo cars 2000 and down to 1993 have a screw on the headlight switch which lets you turn the daytime lights on or off.

2000 and up cars are all computer controlled. You can go to the dealer and have the headlight settings changed to off.

As a default and as a company that promotes and stands for safety all Volvo cars come with that feature enabled.

Small price to pay $4 for a light bulb (Or warranty no charge) but that on time someone does not see you (Because you forgot to turn your lights on) will cost you so much more in the long run.

Canada mandates all cars to have daytime running lights on.

They don't

The light come on automatically when the ignition is switched on

It's the law in Volvo land and therefore sooner than make an entirely different lighting system they all do that. Safety you see

My Harley does it. Be seen you see

Volvo lights come on automatically when you start the engine. You dont have an on or off option whilst driving. Its the way they make 'em

Not just VOLVO'S, all vehicles in the Scandinavian countries MUST use 'day running lights' in daylight hours, they are usually ballasted to be a bit dimmer than normal dipped lights. The same law applies in many other european countries and also Canada.

It's not to see better, but to BE seen better. Have you ever driven into the sunshine and not seen a car appoaching till it was very close? you would have seen its lights from a much further distance.

They are not very bright so to make sure they can see at night the lights come on with the engine. It only takes an hour for a garage to cahnge the wires but few bother

Same with EVERY CAR ON THE FACE OF THE EARTH built since 2000, if not earlier. It's a standard safety feature called day running lights. You've noticed it ONLY on Volvos? My Hondas and Subarus have it too.

I drive a volvo. I don't use the headlights unless it's dark.
Therefore, your question is answered without even thinking about it.
