in addition to Arther o's answer inspect the lamp Assemblies for melting deformities at or near the contact strips [wagons more often than sedans] the lamps are expensive but you can obtain a broken one [lenses] from a junkyard and hot-knife out the sections needed and glue them into your Assembly [use super glue to tack into position and epoxy for strength [ with lamp assembilies in the 175-280 dollar price range for new, alot of fixing can be done to old parts]

The problem is common with Volvo they have really bad tail light connections on the printed cicuit board, most of the time it is easier to replace them rather than try and fix them, also if you replace any bulb in the back lights ie::brake light bulb you have to replace all of them at once, the bulb out indicator works by monitoring the resistance in the circuit, even a slight difference will trigger the light to come on.

Ah yes, Volvo's "bulb out" warning. This function has plagued Volvo owners for years. I found the best way to cure this ongoing problem is to clean everything, bulb bases and sockets. I use electronic contact cleaner and a stiff, non-metallic brush. This cleaning method has proven successful in all my Volvos with the warning light circuit. Sometimes I think it's just easier to physically check all the lights once in a while.

Probably bad connection in the harness near the lights, possibly a bad ground wire, I think the third light has its own ground while the others share a ground. Check to see if either signal light feeds power to other lights that shouldn't be affected, if so its probably a ground wire.

Greetings.
I would recommend you change all three light bulbs and start over. I had a '89 740, and when the lights started going crazy, I just replaced them all - it usually worked.

Make sure all of the grounds are good. Usually the Black wire going to the frame or metal body part is the ground. Make sure you don't have a burned-out lightbulb.
