I don't actually have a new Volvo but I did purchase a new one in 1998. It was a nightmare and I don't really think the reliability is much better in today's models. Consumer Reports hasn't been kind to the XC90 or the S80. Volvo used to be the reliability champ which is why I have owned them since 1968. I still have a '66 1800. My 240 was fantastic, 365000+ miles, no major problems, no engine nonsense, no fuel injection problems, one clutch replacement at 100K. I just maintained it according to a strict schedule, every 3K oil and filter, 5K air and fuel filters, etc. The '98 was a total disappointment after ten superb vehicles. The problems began just before Ford took over and, just my opinion, I don't think Volvo is all it used to be. I wish I still had my 240.

I have owned a
1991 Volvo 740GL 246,000 miles no problem besides the trans going out at 220,000 miles.
1998 Volvo S70 GLT Now has 132,000 miles on it. Just pads rotors and Oil Changes. <--- No Electrical Problems what so ever.
I owned a 2000 S80 with 40,000 miles + on it 2.9L No problems with the car either. Which I just sold 6 months ago to someone that just wanted a great car with low mileage.
Not counting the 1991 Volvo 740 wagon that was just given to me with 140,000 miles on it.
The cars are great cars. What makes the cars crap cars are the people that have 7,500 mile oil change interval and instead of doing it at that time it needs to be done they do it at 10,000 miles.
Cars are like people. You do not take care of your self you get sick. You put crappy food in you you feel like crap. You put good gas in your car, do oil changes on time, and get it checked up once in a while you will get a lot of miles out of these cars.
They will be on your driveway until you hate looking at them not because they are un reliable but because they are 16 years old and still running at 300,000 + Miles.

I have a 2001 V70 with 80,000 miles. I purchased it through a Volvo dealer with 35,000. I've had a lot of problems with this one. I had a 940 I think it was a 940. It was a good care but the suspension really was weak.

My father has a Volvo S60 and he has not had any problems with it, except some few minor things which some people would not even take into consideration (my father is a perfectionist). I think it is a reliable car! Be well! :)
